gearbox lasted 4k miles
Discussion
hello all,
after some thoughts on an issue im having with a car i bought, had a replacement box fitted under warranty by previous owner 4k miles ago and around 5 months. I took ownership around 1 month ago, and the box now needs a rebuild, its a m32 box and has the usual symptoms to wear, but its deteriorating quite quickly.
Now I'd like to know where I stand with this main dealer regarding this. They have supplied and fitted a new box that only lasted 4k miles.
Surely that cant be considered fair wear and tear...
whats the best way to tackle?

M32 is the 6-speed manual box in the mk5 diesel Astra, yes. Won't be a brand new box imho. Most likely a recon one was fitted. Thread needs more info before people can comment - specifically what does the warranty/guarantee say that came with the gearbox? Therein lies your answer. If no written warranty/guarantee came with it then you're out of luck and will have to suck it up.

I don't agree. If a main dealer supplied and fitted the part, it wouldn't be necessary to have a guarantee in writing. You don't expect a gearbox to last a few months!Tim

Assuming it was a new box that was fitted (which I note he's said it was) then yes, it should last more than 5 months, but in the absense of any paperwork (which hasn't been mentioned) and apparently only the previous owner's word then we don't have much to go on. It isn't uncommon for the main dealer to fit a secondhand unit by the way - there's several threads on the Astra owner forums. Whether you get a new box fitted depends on what your answer is when they tell you what the prices are. Most people go for the secondhand option as the price of a new unit sourced by Vauxhall is usually more than the car is worth.

Exactly. In the past I've had main dealers fit used parts, accepting there will be no warranty from them.
Lots of "it depends" in this scenario without more information:
While fitted under warranty by previous owner, was that warranty transferable to you?
Has that "warranty" since expired? (I had a new engine fitted to a Porsche 2 weeks before the end of the manuf warranty and was told in no uncertain terms that the warranty still expired in 2 weeks, and if the new engine blew in 3 weeks time there would be no automatic warranty claim).
Who's warranty was it (dealer/manuf or 3rd party warranty company)?
Under who's instructions did the dealer replace the gearbox? (i.e. if they were getting paid by a 3rd party warranty company they will refer you back to the warranty company who won't deal with you unless the warranty was transferable to you)
Basically, you'd be bloomin lucky if you can get someone else to pay for this.

What do you mean showing signs of wear? You mean the synchros are past their best?
A quick search on interweb will give you an answer, basically noise in 6th, moving gear lever and progression to being noisy in more gears. Historically a s
t box with insufficient oil lub to bearings.hello, just logged back on a loads of replies :+)

What car?
How old? 2008 grande punto
How many miles? 67500 in may when box was replaced, 71500 now
How much was the car? (I.e., was it cheap for a reason, or indeed at all?) £1950
Was the replacement gearbox mentioned in the ad? yes, and the receipt for the work carried out was provided.
Is the gearbox under any separate, transferable warranty? this is what i dont know, the warrenty the previous owners got with the car (also supplied by main dealer) ran out shortly after the box replacement.
Did you buy it from a dealer? no private

3rd and 4th gears whine, on steady throttle high pitched.1st and 2nd gear actually sound like diff, an odd grinding. Everything else has been checked out ok.
Some gearstick movement on and off throttle. sounds awfall to be honest

no warrenty that the car was bought with lapsed shortly after box replacement. from what i gather some form of dealer warrenty, The warrenty co from what i can gather supplied the replacement box dealer said "we just fitted it".While fitted under warranty by previous owner, was that warranty transferable to you?
