Quick update

Chap hit the bus and buggered off, leaving his n/s wing mirror as evidence. Waited for him to return. nothing, however the guy following him came back with a reg and said he saw the guy get out of his van check his damage and carry on.So no intention of returning
Reported to plod, who after a few weeks gave me the impression the CPS wre going to bin it.
I justtold him that this is not the normal mantra spouted out on the various plod progs and asked him their favourite question/quote 'if this had been a child....etc etc'
the next contact was a question of when i wouldnt be available for court, that was back in april!!.Then dead air... until yesterday whwen i got a phone call saying he had pleaded guilty and was fined 338.00 and given 7 points.
now before i get the 'rotten bd jibes' 'live and let live' etc from some quarters, bear in mind this he choose not to stop and come back, and since there was bugger all damage to the bus, he would have been a few bob better off today.

But what are trying to fathom is how he got 7 points?

So any ideas?

Quite possibly found some other stuff at the same time - which is probably the reason for him not stopping? (can you get points for no insurance, no MOT etc?)

you did the right thing, btw.

AC 10 or AC 20 - Failure to stop and report an accident. 5 to 10 points.

Penalty points.

Wow. Well done on getting that result. It's nice to hear of the BiB chasing up such an incident for once, and of the other driver getting his comeuppance.

Good result,

had similar a few years ago with our 3 day old daughter in the car, mirror got taken clean off even after id taken avoiding action and gone up onto the path, all i was left with from the other party was the rear of the mirror, ours was destroyed. No plate or anything from the offender so did some research and had a qashqai mirror back, so put the word out to see if anyone local had seen a champagne colour one with a mirror casing missing and withing days i had a lead. Found the offending car and knocked on the door, no answer frown so back to the local police station as we had reported the incident and gave them the reg/address so they would have a word but after asking for an update a few weeks later was advised it was leased and since been returned (like that should make any difference). case Dropped......

As annoying as it is that doesn't sound certain you'd actually found the culprit.

IMO most Quasqais I see are driven quite poorly so superficial damage to one proves nothing.

Agreed its wasnt set in stone, but at the time (2009) not that many were about, in the same colour, with a missing drivers side mirror, that had scratches that matched plastic/painted mirror casing, within 2 mins of the accident location.....

It would make more sense to me if there was some damage to the bus. He was already paying for his mistake with the damaged mirror.

No, NOW he's paying for his mistake. If he'd stopped and sorted it out at the time then maybe there wouldn't have been an issue, but since he chose to run and hide then tough titty.

But there was nothing for him to sort out as he had not caused any 3rd party damage. The only damage was his own. Effectively there was no incident, nothing to see, nothing to do.

And how would he have known that as he never stopped/returned to the scene?
Ok he didn't cause any 3rd party damage - but on the other hand he could of caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.
He didn't know. He didn't care. And failed to stop/report an accident by fleeing the scene.

The offence requires there to be damage to another vehicle so the chap committed no offence by not stopping. There is no requirement to check. It doesn't matter if he thought some damage had occurred. So there's no chance of the 7 points being as a result of failing to stop, report, etc.

However, it is always worth checking the documentation in such matters, easily enough with present systems. When someone does something a little different then there's a reason. My first suspicion would be no insurance, no driver's licence, that sort of thing. It was well worth a check.

While it must be chosen for the TV, the number they stop for a simple check that have lots of naughtiness is huge. One transgression seems equal lots!

This.

No, he didn't cause any damage but since he never bothered to go and check he wouldn't have known that and therefore was trying to get away with it in case he had.

No sympathy here. In fact, I'd go so far as to say people like this should have their licences taken away for a short while. Might make people think twice about not owning up rather than chancing their arm and trying to get away with it.

Driving licenses should be awarded on a handicapping system, like horse racing but in reverse.

People with Nissan Qashqai's should start with a 3 point handicap on their licence. 9 points and a ban, to encourage them to drive safely.
