Any advice on this? I'll try and make it as simple as I can biggrin

I have a car, fully insured. I don't use it a great deal but I do need it occasionally to ferry around my elderly Mum.

Daughter has today passed her driving test. She's in the fortunate position of having gifts of cash towards her own car from us and her Grandma's, but she wanted to try and save a little more cash and buy her car next year.

My insurance is up for renewal in March, so tried to add her to my policy to tide her over. Insurer will not insure under 21.

It seems that any insurance in her name alone will require her to have a black box fitted.

Is there a way to do this so she can use the car or has she just got to wait until she can buy her own?

You could always fit the black box.

Just get her to take out a policy on your car.

Some polices don't forbid a car having 2 policies. You can only claim from one however.

Thats interesting, thank you.
Just a little confusing if her insurance had a black box on the car but mine didn't iyswim. I suppose I'd also have to drive to the box standards as well redface

OP, if the car is yours and you are still going to be the main user, then just go online and find someone who will cover her as an occasional additional driver. You current insurer won't, but someone else probably will.

If she is going to be the main user, just bite the bullet, re register the car in her name, and she insures it with black box with you and an additional driver.

And cancel your existing policy either way.

Why re-register? My insurer allows me to insure a car not registered to me.

Find an insurer who will insure you both. Cancel current policy, start new policy.

You'll lose 8 months of NCB and may need to pay a cancellation fee.

switch to another insurer who will let you add an under 21 named driver
i refuse to believe none are willing to do that without a black box

Because many don't, and a young driver will want quotes from as many insurers as possible to secure the best deal.

Really though? I insured my mothers car for years with it still registered in her name. I now have my own car, and I have the exact same choice of insures I had before. I think if some insures are picky then its the minority, rather than the majority.
