80 in a 70...BE CAREFUL!
Discussion
Evening all,
Brother popped down to see us on Sunday morning from Hartlepool, mentioned he saw a camera van on a bridge on the A19, and asked me if I thought he would be alright as he had his cruise control set to 80mph. I said he might be alright, just!
Well, today he has just had a NIP through the post for the speed of 80mph, meaning that a) his speedo is extremely accurate, and b) 80mph on a clear and sunny, early Sunday morning with very little traffic is now leaving him a bit lighter in the pocket.
I'll certainly be knocking my cruise control down a few notches from now on...go steady out there you crazy fools!

He's surprised that the speedo didn't have more contingency built in I think
was it on a downhill? The cruise control can allow the car to go faster when its being pulled under gravity. Some cars have a braking function when that happens but by no means all.I have wondered before. If you could drive your car 100mph up a vertical wall what your satnav speed would read?

Surely 100mph as your travelling 100mph at the satellite?
On topic;
I thought this was obvious...I wouldn't go faster than 72 past a camera van in a 70 mph limit.

GPS gives you coordinates as well as altitude if there are enough satellites.I have wondered before. If you could drive your car 100mph up a vertical wall what your satnav speed would read?
However, domestic GPS units probably aren't meant to have good accuracy nor precision in vertical changes of altitude, so in short, i dunno lol. I've never thought about it before tbh.

That camera is set to 77. Any more and you get to do a nice course. Loads of people at work have been done by that mobile. I sold my Cayman earlier in the year and the driver who collected it got done at 78 whilst passing underneath. So no more than 75.
Sad story is that they could set it at 71 if they wanted to.Jasper3.0 said:

Sad times :-(Other than that 75 may not be bad advice but why risk a few mph when there is a risk of dissapointment?

Fully aware of guidelines etc, and not here for sympathy. Just reinforcing food for thought to those who think that speedometers over read significantly or that 80 is safe.
As far as I am aware many of the long serving traffic officers I know would actually be behind a raised motorway speedlimit to 80 or even higher in some cases.sonnenschein3000 said:

You sound surprised that he got a ticket at ten miles an hour over the limit? Guidelines are 10%+2.
I was informed in my speed awareness course that the idea of 10% plus 2 was b
ks by the guy running the course. He may have been just trying to make me look a fool when i piped up but thought id mention it. FocusRS3 said:

t or he was making it up.It's fair to say that 10% + 2mph has no legal standing but, given that the people in ACPO are the ones running the police (and so decide what will be referred for consideration of prosecution) I'd say they have an input!

Edited to add that I was done for 80mph on a dry, quiet, motorway mid-morning as far back as 2006. You can barely recognise my car in their pics, shot from a long way away and quite high up - from a motorway flyover.
