Just out of curiosity..

Can a double sided/faced/headed GATSO camera actually detect both ways?

The reason I ask is because one side points down towards the road surface as GATSOs usually do but the other points up towards the sky thus missing the road surface/lines.

It detects only in the direction it's tilted down at. They can 'flip' it to monitor the other side of the road by tilting it the other way.

I'll be damned. Not seen one of those before. I assume one does traffic and the other does low flying aircraft?

They have these on the Bournemouth spur road, as said they flip them between sides of the road.

Perhaps it's to fool those who know a little bit about Gatsos into thinking "If it's pointing towards me I'm OK" so they go flying past and........Kerr ching!!!!

I remember seeing this on another website years ago. The back part that is pointing upwards is fake. It's designed to make drivers think it can detect both ways, but it can't. Only one side is live.

That doesn't stop the operators rotating it to face the other way though, but again only one side will be live.

No they don't. For one, none of the cameras on the spur road line up with each other, and theres no markings on the other side of the road from the cameras that do exist. Also how do you expect a camera to cover 2 lanes, a substantial central reservation and then another 2 lanes? I go down there every day on my commute and have lived in the area for the last 25 years and never seen a double sided one.

Here you go: http://www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/gatso06.htm

If you Google: "Inside of a Gatso camera" and look at the images, you'll see that there isn't enough space to have a double sided Gatso inside the standard casing - The casing would have to be twice as wide.

As mentioned in the linked website, the cost of having a fake front put on the back of the camera is minimal and it will have the desired effect on the majority of cars on the road.

Wonder why they have two camera reference numbers on the side too? Seems part of a 'thorough' deception from the manufacturer.

I would suspect it;s not a manufacturer deception ...

also whe you spin in round to face the other way the 'other' camera number is the active one and the first the dummy ...

Almost all of the gatso cameras that I've ever encountered do not have a reference number on the side of them, so it's not something from the manufacturer. I'd say it's just something that the local authority has decided to put on the side of them.

As suggested, I suspect the second reference number is simply part of the deception of it being a "double sided" camera.

The idea of having the second reference number for when the camera faces the other way makes little sense as there's nothing to distinguish which number is for which direction, so how would that work?

I'd say that if the reference numbers are used for anything, then this camera is simply referred to as "camera 218/219" regardless of which direction it's facing.

I haven't checked the map (javascript off) However its the one on Scotthall Road isn't it?

Going to be driving hell round here for years to come shortly. 20mph limits all over the place, speed humps, stupid redesigns of the 3 major junctions on the A6120. As if there wasn't enough pollution in (top 5) Leeds already. Nevermind taking 2+ times the time to get anywhere.
