Hi, just received this. Haven't had a speeding ticket sine early 80s and confused about this.
It happened at 4.30 in the morning, i was giving a friend a lift to Luton Airport so must be correct. Are they saying that I sped or that i went through a red light, If i was speeding what speed are they say I was doing ?
I will obviously fill it all in and send it back but would be grateful is someone could explain what this letter is saying and what I should do
Thanks

absolute mess that is but from what I can gather you were doing 40 in a 30

Speeding, 40 in a 30, so probably within a Speed Awareness thingy if you want to avoid points and fund a quango smile

It clearly states you were doing 40mph in a 30 mph zone and captured by a camera - so it is a speeding offence not red light

There might be a clue in the words...
Beds police said:
Alleged offence: Speeding - exceed 30 miles per hour
...and...
Beds police said:
The recorded speed of the vehicle was 40 mph
There seems to be a sign at the start of the road that says "Average speed check". And lots of speed bumps.

40 average down there's a bit... ambitious. Even without the signs, cameras, and at 4.30.

Thank you, no excuses from me. Got caught fair enough, to be honest i was more in a panic trying to get friend to the airport on time and was following their directions and there were no cars or anything that time of morning.

You are right that the letter is poorly worded and confusing. It appears that their computer can only print out one type of letter for both speeding and red light offences and isn't clever enough to work out which is which so prints both values from the database and hopes you can decipher it yourself.

I'd be tempted to format your response in a similarly cryptic manor, but you'd probably upset them.

OK it is a pretty poor system if it can't differentiate to produce different letters relating to the offence. It is, however, pretty clear what the offence is. I found the 'not acceptable' mitigating circumstances quite amusing though smile

Even more interesting is that a "faulty camera" is not accepted! Really?
