Highways England staff may be given limited powers to issue tickets for offences including speeding.

Well, I never saw that coming...

This will give us neither.

I wonder if the wombles even want this, it's bad enough with people bunching behind them thinking they're Police as it is.

I'm not surprised - but I don't necessarily believe anything that the Daily Mail publishes though.

WTF has speeding and using a mobile got to do with the defence and security of this septic sceptred isle? Maybe we are all regarded as potential terrorists now. rolleyes

Or is it just another bit of DF made-up journalism?

These are specifically "Motorway Wombles" responsible for tidying the rubbish away after a Motorway incident.

I always thought it suspicious how they started with amber lights on the roof, which were later changed to white lighting bars so you couldn't differentiate between them and police blue lights inside white covers. Now I see where that is headed.

Yes, I have thought that.

Whoever designs their vehicles hasn't exactly gone out of their way to make them look different from police cars.

This was the plan for the start, although inept cuts to funding have meant implementation was delayed.

Given the swingeing cuts to the police service, hiving off some of its responsibilities must be seen as inevitable. It is, essentially, privatisation. First there was parking, now, possibly, this.

In the same way as the old days of police traffic wardens are now seen at the golden age of parking, extending traffic regulation enforcement to non-warranted units will be seen as a tragedy for drivers.

Welcome to the new world, same as the old world, but it will cost a lot more.

Well if they ant to do this they can fine you but surely they can't impose penalty points/bans? - much in the way council parking wardens operate?

Why not? Are they any different than camera partnerships that have had the powers of detection entrusted to them by the CC? Of course they will have to be prepared to have their evidence tested in court

They don't have to. They just send a letter asking you to confess and then the points are automatically applied, no need for all that expensive court malarkey. Next step dashcam 'evidence' and citizen enforcement by local resident's groups.

That's because of regulations regarding reflective markings for vehicles working in a m/way. You can take the tin foil off.

Does that explain the black glass yellow beacons?
