Speed cameras have a dubious ability to reduce accidents, and in a large number of cases actually contribute to accident causation (dft says: -700+ sites saw no benefit and an increase in accidents at speed camera sites).
Regression to the mean isnt taken into account when "successful stats" are published, which gives a false positive spin to speed cameras.
Speed cameras cannot influence the outcomes of accidents where speed has no part in the initial causation of accidents (the majority of accidents occur entirely within the limits) and so the supposed benefits are substantially less than being claimed.
Speed cameras contrary to what is being claimed are not "safety" cameras; they have NO safety function whatsoever as all they do is provide an easy way of prosecution and collection of fine revenue, they cannot therefore have a preventative "safety" function.
If the validity of that statement is doubted, i would point out the record numbers of drivers STILL being prosecuted for exceeding the limits.
If speed cameras prevented speeding the figures WOULD be lowering, not rising.
If speed cameras "saved lives" (their much trumpeted purpose) then why are DEATHS (i do not recognise the term"KSI" as a valid one) rising?
Maybe speed isnt the problem after all? Maybe its driver training, attention and attitude that needs the focus of the so-called "safety partnerships"?
Perhaps, just possibly theyve got it wrong? It wouldnt be the first time that a "good idea" was perverted into a "bad idea",(cash generation at the expense of road safety ) and in the arena of road safety, its such a bad idea that people are dying at a higher rate than before the so-called "safety" cameras were introduced!
Until this fixation with speed as the only thing to focus on is scrapped, we will continue to see rising deaths while the "partnerships" continue to make a good living out of death and misery.
Its a national disgrace that we HAD the safest roads in the world and the "safety" partnerships are destroying that achievement.
Stop the "speed kills" lies, and disband the "partnerships" (prosecution for manslaughter through wilful negligence and incompetence, profiteering and distribution of false information, and perverting the course of justice, would be a good place for their reparation to commence).
As a final thought for you: Aspirin dosent cure Rabies, just as speed cameras dont cure deaths on the roads, and especially where speed isnt a factor in causation.
