Do a bit of instructing in a martial art and have been asked to think about setting up a small club in a new area. Problem is the leisure centre want a DBS number.

Looking at the DBS agency website I can't apply for it. Any suggestions how to go about it? What 'level' is most likely required?

Ta.

If you're going to be teaching anyone under 16 you'll need the Enhanced DBS. If not the standard one is fine.

Check with the leisure centre though in case they want the Enhanced with list checks (same price, just takes a bit longer to process - it includes stuff like List 99 which is the list of people barred from teaching, etc.)

Looking at the small print on that site, it just makes an application to Disclosure Scotland at https://www.mygov.scot/basic-disclosure/apply-for-... but costs more than twice as much.

I don't think you can apply for a DBS check. I think the organisation that is requesting the check has to apply with your consent. Not sure why, maybe to stop people altering certificates?

The whole DBS system is flawed. To many people/organisations believe it to be the thing to have.

Have a DBS and you are a good person, don't have one and you are a pervert.

Hence many people who according to the DBS don't require one, still have to get them done. An example is school/junior sports photography. They don't actually need a DBS check but many need to get them done.

All the Counties we work for require Enhanced for our operatives working on Schools. Technically, they're out of date as soon as they land.

If someone was working with my kids, I'd like to low they'd been spun.

Does your martial arts organisation have a safeguarding officer? You may be able to get it through them

That the problem, you feel safe because someone has had a check done on them. All the check means is at the time of the check that they haven't been caught. (which you do admit is the case.)

The fact that you have staff that work on school buildings and the schools say they need a DBS check just proves the system is wrong.

A DBS check will just show you've not been caught, not that you are of impeccable character!

Not big enough. You have to be applying for over 100/year or some such. All the martial arts governing bodies I've looked into seem a bit 'low rent' for want of a more fitting description; mobile phone number, residential address etc.

I suppose the leisure centre could apply on my behalf? No harm in asking I guess.

Does seem a very bizarre setup, especially the fact that they are not something that seemingly has to be re-applied for regularly.

Yeah, will be kids (including my own). It is the enhanced I need which a lot of the companies advertising can't help with.

Looking at the DBS web they have a help line. I'll give them a call Monday.

I'd push the leisure centre to do it, explain the martial arts organisation doesn't see a requirement for it, I'd also point out you're only renting training space not working for them, same as hiring a badminton court and taking 10 kids for lessons. If you get no luck try a care agency for kids, see if they will do it for you, £50 to them for the costs, then go on the online system for £19 each year and keep up to date.

Surely its just like the best murderers never get caught - the 'best' molesters won't be on the list?

After all the Saville etc nonsense hit the fan our local County Council suddenly got a conscience and wanted all people dealing with kids in sport, theatre and performance to be licensed chaperones.
This included an advanced CRB and a short lecture .
This was done by a couple of women from the county council ..
The CRB check was done in a professional manner .The rest of it was a farce .
The women were late ,couldn't find the venue ,were ill prepared and seemed to make it up a they went along .
They also told multiple lies when we enquired as to why our licences were taking so long to arrive .
I t was a free service though and the licence has been accepted in many parts of the country and by many organization.
