Hi,
On Tuesday afternoon / evening I drove from Sheffield to Oxford for the football match. This morning I received a request for information relation to an incident that allegedly happened before the game involving my car.

The letter had 3 stamps on it. 1 - Careless driving 2 - Failure to report an accident and 3 - Failure to stop at an accident.

Now I was in my car, around the area of the alleged incident at around the time stated on the letter. I am absolutely sure I was not involved in an accident though. There were 3 passengers in my car at the same time and all 3 of them have verified the same. The traffic was very heavy, we were taking it very slow and certainly would have noticed hitting another car. We did not get close to another vehicle / get beeped at.

I called the local police station and they were unwilling to talk to me unless it was in writing so I have sent off the form straight away confirming that I was driving. There was a space to provide extra information / comments on the end so I have stated that I was not in an accident, requested information about the allegations and provided the details of all 3 of my passengers who are willing to back me up.

I did some googling earlier and one of the advice posts said it was best to speak to my insurance to see if a claim had been made against me. They have checked and as of yet no claim has been made. They noted down the call and asked me to send pictures of my car over. There is not a mark on my car.

I'm a pretty experienced driver now and have always had a totally clean licence. Its really knocked my duck off today. I was wondering if anyone else had received a similar letter before or has any advice please?

What are the next steps likely to be? especially as I am totally confident that my car was not involved in an accident.

Involved in an accident isn't limited to being in a collision so that your vehicle has come into contact with another. It can be because of something you did that another had a collision.

Thank you for the reply. I realise that, but neither my passengers or myself recall us being anywhere close to another vehicle or doing anything that could have caused an accident.

If it's going to go anywhere expect them to make an appointment for an interview under caution.
If they don't it's not likely to go anywhere.

I really wish I had just listened on the radio now! Missed kick off due to the chaos with parking around the ground. Didn't get back until 2 am as it took over an hour to get off the car park at the end of the game and now I have a letter from the police to go with it.

At least they won

Send the form back as you have done.

DON'T contact your insurer. You'll only get stung.

If you did nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear.

You should have told him that before he did...

Yep, I've spoken to them! Might have dropped one on that part then.

Although I have to say I was quite impressed with them. They confirmed that no one had made a claim or reported an accident to them involving my car. Which did help to put my mind at rest a little. They said they would make a note of my call and save dated pictures of my car showing no damage so they can dispute any potential future claim. They confirmed I had optional legal protection so I guess that's good just in case. They also confirmed that my premiums will stay exactly the same unless anything does come of this.

damage is already done.

I would be VERY surprised if they don't bump your insurance next year.

I was falsely accused in 2009, a claim was made on my insurance.

It took nine months to sort and ended in my accusers being dealt with by a court, West Midlands Police were fabulous.

My insurance renewal did happen during the nine months, I had to pay an increased premium, I was refunded in full once things were sorted.

Friend had a similar letter a few years ago, never had any concerns with his driving/attitude behind the wheel, so surprised a lot of us. CSR was immaculate, nothing ever came of it.

Police unconnected with the above suggested he had probably upset someone else on the road and they have got the hump at him.

This was kind of what i was thinking to be honest. I know I'm a careful driver. My car is a bright blue Astra vxr that is quite loud (standard not a chavved up exhaust). Gets some positive attention as well as some negative. I've had a couple of maniac comments just because it sounds like it's going fast when in reality I drive at the speed limit.

Bit left field but- could you have hit a pedestrian? They wouldn't be claiming on your insurance (or potentially not yet), and I have seen drivers not notice that they have struck people with their car before.

100% definitely not!

If we had even come close to coming into contact with some one or something one of the 4 people in the car would have had some idea as to what this letter was about. It's come as a shock to all of us. I phoned my 3 passengers individually to ask and their reactions were all along the lines of WTF?
