I got stopped and ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt the other week, I have just been offered the opportunity to go on a two hour 'seatbelt awareness' course!

It costs half as much as the ticket and it means taking a day off work for most folk just to save £15. How popular is that going to be!

I think I might just go to see what is is all about though...

They'll just show you pictures of what happens when you have a crash without a belt on and the like.

Save the days holiday, pay the £30 as I would wager a days work for you is worth slightly more than £15...

Do you get points for not wearing a seatbelt, if not I would pay the extra £15 and go to work. We all know what can happen if you don't wear a seat belt just the same as we all know what can happen if you speed.

I don't plan on taking time off work. I am not working as much as I would like at the moment though so will see if i can do it when i am not working. not really to save myself £15, more out of curiosity.

How do they know you're not a masochist, and like the idea of flying though your windscreen along with many bits of broken glass, into a rough tarmac surface at speed?

Why would anyone not wear a seatbelt?
I guess if you think you don't need to wear one then you should go on the course.

Last year in the US on holiday hardly anyone seems to use seatbelts (even though they're legally required). In the 'yesterday's crashes' bit of the local newspaper there were several people killed each day who'd been ejected from their cars during crashes.

I don't know your circumstances but...........if it was me I'd ring in a sickie, save £15 so we give the authorities as little as possible, then attend, make them feel good, ask stupid, obvious, questions then re-post telling us whether it was a contractor doing the course or real BiB's. If it's real ones ask them why they aren't out fighting real crime.

I don't post often now, but when I do I usually get a written slap for my views, oh well, bring it on!!

I think this explains why a seatbelt might be handy. A PH'er over on the Rallying thread posted this up after a slight argument with a tree yesterday, the fact that he posted it up speaks for itself really. Without a seatbelt/harness he would'nt be able to post from up there I assume.

A question. With the latest cars having airbags in every orifice, just how much extra protection does a seatbelt give?
Seems to me perfectly possible that a seatbelt might cause more injuries under certain conditions.

Good question. Both seat belts and airbags are on balance a good thing, but it's not all black & white.

Both systems can cause injuries, it's just that they on balance save more injuries than they cause.

I do know someone who won't buy a car without airbags now, but having a pair of spectacles very forcibly pushed into your face by an airbag isn't a lot of laughs.

Early airbags were simple one push devices. My understanding is that these days two speed or phased push is used.

Ok, I signed up for the seatbelt awareness course and paid my £15, I am booked in for august 3rd!

I just got a letter from the Court saying i had not paid my fine and now it has gone up

I now have to prove to the Authorities that I am infact booked on the course they offered me before they will call off the dogs. Why can't the Court just phone up the Police or check the computer to find this stuff out and it could be sorted in two minutes!

A mate of mine rolled his sierra last year after taking a corner too fast.
He wasn't wearing a seatbelt and when the car rolled he stayed in the same position so ended up with his head in the footwell and both his shoes cames off. Remarkably though he didn't have a scratch on him even though the car was written off.

I always wear mine though.

Sounds like your mate was doing a bit of stunt driving and took his shoes off so he could steer with his toes..his plan fell apart when he reached down into the footwell to operate the pedals with his hands..he is BS'ing you

hmm, reminds me of when my dad was in the back once, refused to wear a belt.
Was a completely empty road, was doing 15 mph, yelled brake check, slammed on the brakes to about 5 mph.
straight into the seat back...his hand was swollen for a few days after that. 30 mph crash passengers have the force of a 5 tonne elephant iirc.

I have a feeling they put you in the simulator.

Its a short inclined railway, where the carriage is just a car seat. It's released at the top, and there's a dead stop at the bottom.

I don't think the speed is more than 15 - 20 mph, but it's got one hell of a kick. It makes you think.

Ah, and to whoever mentioned airbags, airbags and seatbelts are designed to work together, in the US they've had to alter the way the bags fire since lots of people dont wear belts and expect the bags to do all the work.
All in all though not wearing a belts like not giving your kid the tripple vaccine, you're afraid of the one in a couple of hundred thousand chance of something happening so you take an action that gives you a ten times higher chance of something else unsavoury happening. Not logical. Wear the belt correctly, always keep a cutting tool in the glove box and even the most paranoid dont have anything to worry about.

A good many moons ago, the (now late) Donald Cambell crashed Bluebird during a land speed record attempt in Australia at some 300 mph. He was admitted to hospital with a hairline fracture - saved from worse by a crash helment and 6-point seat belt. At the same time, a lady was admitted to the same hospital with multiple injuries including many broken bones after a 40mph crash in her car. Needless to say, she had not been wearing a selt belt.

Go on the seat belt awareness course just for curiosities sake.
Having been in a smash where my seatbelt probably saved me from some very serious injuries (as opposed to cuts bruises and a couple of cracked ribs) i can't understand why someone wouldn't wear a seat belt, then again it's one of those important little details that is easy to forget.

Can't really comment of airbags as i've never driven a car with them fitted. Expect they can cause some pretty nast injuries, especially if you're sucking a lolly pop when it goes off
