Possibly waiting for roadworks but could go live anytime, two GATSOs on the M4, more risky for those approaching from the Bristol M32 direction or heading back. The first, at the start of the downhill run to the A46 exit is just after a bridge, not hidden but certainly not in full open view. The second is by the on-slip for heading back to Bristol from the same junction. They were hooded on the Saturday track day but it's Easter Monday race day today - who knows. Mods, also posted on GG. Edited to add, maybe more on the other side of the junction, haven't been there. This is clearly an accident hotspot, and we all know what speed does, so take it easy out there.

MOTORWAY SAFETY PLEA

A temporary 40mph speed limit is being imposed on a stretch of the M4 north of Bristol to protect road users and workers engaged in major motorway improvements.

The new limit – lower than the normal 50mph restriction imposed at motorway road works – will come into effect on February 25, under a Department of Transport order.

Yellow-painted safety cameras will be set up between junction 19 (the M32 junction) and junction 19 (Tormarton) to ensure drivers observe the temporary speed limit.

The road improvements will involve the closure of the eastbound carriageway of the motorway between the two junctions, with a contra flow system on the westbound carriageway.

The eastbound exit slip road and the westbound entry slip roads will also be closed during the work, which should be completed in January 2006.

During this time the Highways Agency will be working to widen the motorway over a three kilometre uphill stretch on the eastbound carriageway of the M4 west of junction 18 to create a “climbing lane” for slow moving traffic.

Police Sergeant Mel Small, of the Safety Camera Partnership, said: “These will be major works on what is a very busy stretch of road. Also the contra flow will create quite narrow carriageways.

“It was felt sensible to introduce a 40mph limit to reduce the risk of accidents, protect the travelling public and the workers carrying out this essential work on the motorway.

“The speed limit will be well-signed in advance and we appeal to drivers to control their speed – for everyone’s sake.”

In recent years a number of road workers have been killed or seriously injured after being struck by vehicles while working on motorways and trunk roads across the country.

Drivers who exceed the temporary 40mph speed limit will face a £60 fine with three penalty points on their licence.

The Safety Camera Partnership in Avon and Somerset was formed by local highways and health authorities, police, Crown Prosecution Service, the Magistrates’ Courts Service and Highways Agency, with the aim of reducing road casualties through driver education programmes and the enforcement of speed limits.

More information about the partnership, including the location of roadside safety cameras and the areas in which the mobile camera teams are working, can be found on its web site – www.safecam.org.uk.

Can't see why 40mph tho. The junction closures will be a mega pain though. However, the alternative routes for cars (Castle Combe road or A420) are under Wilts and whats the betting they'll be prioritising these for their scam vans.
