Hiya,
I just bought another car. Its currently SORNed and the Garage has just gotten it serviced and MOT'ed.

As the new owner, do I need to re-SORN it or is that automatic. The reason is I want to tax it after the 1st so not to lose a month so was wondering if I was setting myself up for a fine by ignoring the car a few days (still at garage, but seriously tempted after todays sun)

Technically speaking as you are now the owner you should SORN as you notify change of ownership if its going to be off the road.

As there are only a couple of days left in the month I would hang fire until 1st then tax the vehicle from 1.4. at GPO using Form V10 and new keepers supplement that will have been handed to you by Garage. Taxing the vehicle removes sORN automatically.

Using it on a road whilst on SORN isn't good news if your caught by a variety of detectors in use.

Again don't rely on the garage to notify change of ownership. Do it yourself.

PS Where is all this sun? Reet clarty here.

I bought the car off the owner and we had it trailored up to the garage who completed the service and MOT. I have now received the new V5 and also the MOT so should be set to get the tax here on the 1st.
The car is basically staying with them until I pick it up with the new tax disc. I'm not worried as they are a specialist garage that have worked on all my Lotii, so she'll have to wait until thursday/friday

Not forgetting that it takes about a week to go through the DVLA's system, so your car might be shown as SORN upto a week after you tax it. I got stopped one night shortly after taxing the car (having been SORN'ed for about 6 months), took a while to explain the situation to plod.

He inspected the tax disk and remarked "either its genuine or a very very good copy". Being young and in an unusual car didn't help.

When I bought the Ultima it had also been SORNed. I also got stopped on the M4 by plod after a lenghty chase as I couldnt see his blue lights being on as the huuuuge carbon wing obscured everything on the roof.
He said is was because the car was ANPR'ed as SORN so wanted to check. We had a good laugh, he checked the fresh disc and fresh paperwork from the postoffice and we had a chat about the car and racing. Nice guy and he even gave me directions to where I was going.

But the amount of numpties and micra driving OAP's "tut-tut"-ing and giving me the "serves him right" look as they passed Plod and a silver Ultima was fun though

On a side note:

Does anybody think the post office will issue me a Tax disc today that is valid from tomorrow?

Don't see why not. I always used to tax the Firenza a few days before April 1st, just remember the disc doesn't become valid until tomorrow. Also remember that if you have insurance that expires on 31st March, you need to show a certificate or cover note that is valid when the tax disc starts, not when you are buying it.

Just been through this myself.

You can get a new disc for a car that is currently taxed any time after the 15th of the month before the tax is to be renewed, and the new disc will start from the 1st of the following month.

If the car is untaxed/SORN, then you can only apply for a new disc 2 days before the start of the next month.

So in short, you should be fine today.

Not quite the same but I've been fined £40 and then £80 for not sending the SORN form in.
Unfortunately I did send it and I copied the form before I sent it. I also told them that my car is in a garage and has been since 13 August 2004 and therefore why would I not complete the form.

So I told them to stick their fine. I am awaitng the reply. See you in court I feel!

I had this same situation - I filled out my form correctly, handed it into the Post Office, and got a receipt. Then I got a letter saying I hadn't declared SORN, and was liable for a £25 fine. I wrote back and said 'oh yes I did', enclosed a copy of the receipt, and the fine was cancelled. The tone of the letter wasn't very nice though - basically along the lines of "we won't be taking any action on this occasion". Very good of you, I thought, given that I haven't actually done anything wrong.
