VW DSG Fault best way forward ...
Discussion
Hi Guys,
Just want to get some idea on the best way forward if this turns ugly ...
I have a 2013 VW Polo GTI with the DSG gearbox. I have owned it for 6 months, bought at 9000 miles, now has 16000. 1 years 'all parts' warranty.
No issues I was aware of when I bought it (from main VW dealer), but, today I realise it has an additional fault I was unaware of, which was there from day 1.
It started to clunk when changing gear, mostly 2nd, but happens in 1st, 3rd and 4th. Not noticed it in 5th, 6th or 7th. It is intermittent, but will usually happen during a 10 minute drive around town for example. Additionally, the gears changes can be jerky (again intermittent) and the fault I was unaware of (and thought was normal) - when starting off in 'D' it barley uses 1st and pretty much goes straight to 2nd. 2nd is geared quite low, so this isn't an issue, but the dealer tells me today it shouldn't be doing it. This last issue (skipping 1st and going straight to sencond) has been there since the day I picked it up - I just thought it was normal.
It's been in today, no fault codes and they reset the gearbox but this has made no difference. They acknowledged to me today that they don't know what's wrong with it (but do accept something isn't right).
They are going to continue tomorrow, I have left it with them..
One comment they made was a bit disturbing - it was along the lines of 'We don't want to keep it too long but will do so whilst we are making progress'. I didn't respond to this at the time, but it suggested they 'might' be prepared to say, can't find the fault, here have it back.
They are going to call me tomorrow - any advice on how to handle it if they try and give it back.
I'm quite happy for them to continue trying to fix it, within a reasonable time. However, I'm happy to reject it if they can't - but am unsure of my rights with it being 2nd hand. I've been in this position years back with a new car which dragged on for 8 months - I'm not interested in that again. I think I have to allow one attempt to fix (which they had today) so anything above that is 'goodwill' on my part ???
Thanks in advance.

Give them a specific timeframe to fix it. Get a car off them for the meantime.
If they can't fix it and won't play ball, I'd speak to CAB about your rights of rejection. They have told you the car isn't right.
Consumer rights act info here:
http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation/...
Have a read and see what you can pick up from it.
As you have already indicated, it makes sense to keep it friendly. Simply charging in with copies of the act in hand and demanding your rights will just hinder proceedings.
What was the specific warrant on the car? Was the car an 'Approved' one?

I ran a 2011 Fabia with the same engine and gearbox. It barely used 1st in D from new, so maybe they all do that? If it drives fine where's the problem? If you want to rev through 1st use either manual or sport mode.Just want to get some idea on the best way forward if this turns ugly ...

Thank you for the replies. Specifically I was a bit confused as I'm 'just' over the 6 months period, within which things are somewhat easier ... though I think I reported at least 2 issues to them within the 6 month period, just had to wait 3 weeks for a slot when they could start looking at it..
Yes, it was Approved/ Used - 1 years 'all components' warranty. Supposed to have had a full 300 point check or whatever, well it seems they missed point 3 described below ...
There was actually one other issue I forgot to mention on this thread (I reported this to them a few weeks ago - although I appreciate it is minor, perhaps with the other issues it becomes more relevant. In 'D' - if you change manually, it drops into 'semi-auto' but should return to 'D' after a short time. Typically, this is fine and works, but intermittently it stays in Semi auto you have to force it back to full auto.
So we have :
1. Clunk into gears (or when clutch comes up, difficult to tell 'exactly when it happens) - mechanical - clutch / dual mass flywheel
2. Jerky gear changes - mechanical - clutch / dual mass flywheel
3. Skipping first gear - electrical
4. Not returning to full auto after 'manual' gearchange - electrical
Quite a mix ...
No codes logged, which is what seems to have stumped them - understandable to an extent as where do you start, mechatronics unit contains the 'brain' of it all I believe, but yet we have some seemingly mechanical issues - has it really developed separate faults at the same time with different causes ???
I'm certainly in a strongish position - I'll wait for the call today, or pop in this afternoon as I need to get a couple of things out the car I left in, so will see what they say.

Martin

I thought it was normal as well, it was only yesterday they told me that it shouldn't be doing that ....So although not a big deal, they are saying it is a fault, which makes x4 faults now ....

Maybe your dealer is wrong on that point. All the DSG-type gearbox cars I have driven with 7 or more gears tend to start in 2nd unless uphill. So although not a big deal, they are saying it is a fault, which makes x4 faults now ....

Certainly the car doesn't seem to mind, and pulls perfectly well in 2nd from an almost stop.
I used to have an Ibiza with the 7 speed dry clutch, although I didn't have any issues with it I read about many problems with that gearbox and them s
tting themselves quite often.
As far as it being in first gear, In drive that and the 6 speed I have now just gets out of gear asap so it doesn't spend much time at all in first gear unless you are in sport or in kickdown from standing.

We don't have the exact same DSG boxes (we've got the 7 speed quattro one in the S5, and 6 speed FWD in the Golf GTI) but in both of those it always sets off in 1st gear. It will be reluctant to drop from 2nd to 1st unless you come to a total halt - if the wheels are turning it'll usually stay in 2nd.
The Golf is a later car and smoother on gear changes, but for the avoidance of doubt have you ruled out driving style? Is it smoother if you just lift off the brakes and let the clutches engage before going near the throttle? Makes a big difference to smooth progress if you treat it like a manual, almost.
I'd suggest a couple of possibilities - try another identical spec car and see how that behaves. Get a fault code read with VCDS to see if it agrees there's no stored codes. If no joy check if they've run basic settings/adaptations so the box learns clutch engagement etc again.
In ours, if you change gear manually with the gear selector in D, it will revert to D after a set period of no gear changes. If you want it back in D before that happens we just pop it across into the manual gate and back again and it reverts to D. If it's in the manual gate, it'll stay that way.

Wife's 7 speed Tiguan always starts in 1st too, and it isn't quite so reluctant to drop to 1st at give-ways etc. But I've seen other owners say their's start in 2nd.You have to be careful comparing what DSG boxes do - there's at least half-a-dozen of them and even the same boxes in the same car will have different programming over time.

I had the 6 speed DSG in my old Skoda Superb, it also very rarely went anywhere near first gear unless I intentionally selected it whilst in manual mode.
We have a 2011 Octavia DSG as a pool car at work, the 7 speed variant and I don't recall ever seeing it in first gear.
Fair point, sounds like the dealer may be wrong on that point - I'll mention it.We have a 2011 Octavia DSG as a pool car at work, the 7 speed variant and I don't recall ever seeing it in first gear.

I've tried every variation I can think of - waiting a few seconds after it's changed, not waiting, changing down manually - makes little difference. Changing down, the 'clunk' can still occur , although can sometimes seem less severe if you stay off the throttle. That said, it varies in seveity even if you get back on the throttle earlier.
Oddly, if accelerating, it seems less severe if you actually accelerate a bit harder than normal.
They ran the basic settings/adaptations the first day they had it (which was the plan), but this made no difference. I believe day 2 and 3 they have been talking to VW about what to do and as they put it 'been looking at it all day'. That's as much as an update as I got, I'll call them Monday and see if I can get any more out of them.
I would have thought they'd be looking at changing parts, but as there are no codes it seems to have stumped them somewhat.
