Speed Limit Clarification
Discussion
Hoping someone can clarify this to settle a Facebook argument
There is a new housing estate where i work, there is 3 entrances to the estate, one at each end of road that runs through the estate and a 3rd elsewhere.
One end of the main drag is signed 20mph as you enter thus making you think the estate is a 20mph limit. The other end of the main drag is no signage at all, you come off of a 40mph road. The 3rd entrance also has no signage at all, again you enter it from a 40mph road.
There are no other signs other than the two 20mph signs as you enter from one end, there was speculation that they were put up by the developers while the estate was in it early development stage.
Is it 40mph? Is it 20mph? Is it 30mph?
Obviously being a built up area with street lighting the default would be 30mph but i'm in the understanding there should be signage at the start of the limit which there isn't.
Any ideas?

Practical reality 30mph for the reasons you mention, as opposed to the 20mph some probably wish for as evidenced by the random signs. There is a new housing estate where i work, there is 3 entrances to the estate, one at each end of road that runs through the estate and a 3rd elsewhere.

40mph is likely fantasy.
A lot of the roads around here are very similar OP, even main roads. You have 20mph signs entering one end of a road, but the other end (and all the junctions along it) come from 30mph or 40mph roads and have no signage. In effect the drivers coming in from end A are doing 20(ish), but the drivers coming in from end B and side roads 1, 2, 3 and 4 are all doing 30. It makes for some interesting road rage when 70% of the drivers are fuming at the 30% doing 20 'for no reason'.

That's what i was trying to figure, i'm guessing the estate is not fully adopted by the council yet hence the lack of official signage.

All I can think of when I read that...

The main criteria would be if the roads have been adopted or are still private ,owned by the developer.
I worked on new development industrial estate where the signage was all over the place - Including 15mph limit signs printed on paper, laminated and cable tied to lamposts !Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
