Can anyone offer any guidance.

Lad from the office reckons he got flashed on the M6 northbound at Birmingham where the new speed gantries are but he's adamant the variable speed signs were not illuminated. He thinks he was flashed at an indicated 86 but the flash came from the hard shoulder and he was in lane 2 where there were no gatso markings.

NIP due to come or is he mistaken?

Cheers

Possibly. He'll have to wait and see. The new cameras HADECS 3 don't have road markings and are positioned on the hard shoulder.

The new managed motorway cams are on the side of the gantry anyways, aren't they? (i.e on hards shoulder side)

Cameras still work even if the variable signs aren't lit.

I got flashed on the M5 Northbound near Bristol. 82 in a 70.

Cheers for the replies....

He got flashed on April Fools day.... When will he be safe given the bank holidays and what's his likely punishment?

I can confirm HADECS 3 are fitted on the M6 just before the M42 Junction (both directions) . Side mounted on the gantries

Seems a strange thing to ask. It is dependent on too many factors.

Just wait. He'll either be lucky or he won't. No one on here can give you anything but false hope and/or guesses.

Best to assume managed motorway cameras are on all the time don't you think?

Totally agree.... especially on my trip to the Highlands over the Easter holidays... ive heard the roads can be monitored by loads of cameras as well as un marked cars

Does he have any points already?

Has he recently purchased the car?

Is his V5 registered to his current address or is it a lease car or similar?

Usually they would get a NIP in the post within 14 days of the offence requesting to identify the driver but it goes to the address on the V5 at the time of the incident.

Or if he alread 9 points it'll likely be a summons

Yes, the new ones are no longer above on the gantries but now on the side of the gantry on the hard shoulder side. One camera for x lanes, i think they use the mobile data networks to send data.

Edited - They are the new Hadecs 3's.

Dont think he has any points but recently bought a new xtrail and its in his name...

Yeah he's been ribbed about being 16mph above the nsl and to thank himself lucky the variable limits werent in force otherwise it could be ban time

That doesnt always matter.

I got done on managed motorways on the M4 managed motorway near Bristol.

Variable speed sign was not illuminated but I got done for 81 in a 70...

I think it varies from managed motorway to managed motorway but I'm always cautious now.

I don't see why it matters - the speed limit isn't 'variable' unless the sign is lit, so it defaults to the NSL.

81 is in excess of 70 so why would you not be done? It would be more in excess of 60 but is still enough over to be done.

As others have probably now pointed out there are new speed cameras on the M6 on the approach to the M6 Toll. They are mounted high up on the hard shoulder and painted yellow.

There are speed camera signs just before. Just after J13 IIRC

I had better slow down then.
When no specific speed is displayed I stick at an indicated 85 in the flow of traffic.

I think the point being made is that at least on some sections of managed motorway cameras are being used to enforce the NSL and not just temporary limits when the variable speed limit signs are flashing. In the past I'm fairly sure there have been people on this forum who have stated these cameras aren't used to enforce the NSL but it clearly happens in some places already and to me it's inevitable that eventually it will happen on all stretches of managed motorway.
