Modding a car to become illegal in France. 2018.
Discussion
Just saw this on a French site. Very OTT in my opinion.
Funny how the powers that be have ignored the crap driving exhibited by far too many French.
One more step is taken in the fight against the modification of vehicles circulating on French territory. More commonly known as "tuning", this fashion is now in danger.
Indeed, a measure voted on 6 December 2016 tends to prohibit any modification, be it an aesthetic or an order to alter the performance of its vehicle.
No more neon lights, body kits and other engine reprogramming, since from 1 January 2018, any modification revealed to the technical inspectorate or by the police forces during an inspection will lead to the immobilisation of the vehicle.
This measure, adopted unanimously by the government, responds to the increase in road deaths in 2016, Observed by road safety. In September 2016, there was an increase of 4.3 deaths on the road compared to September 2015, ie an additional 62 deaths.
The "tuning" has been pointed out by politicians, since it is most often assimilated to so-called "at risk" behaviors: speeding, wild runs, etc.
The owners of modified vehicles will thus have up to 'On 1 January 2018 to remove any signs of alteration on their vehicle, otherwise their vehicle will be immobilized. In addition, persons who refuse to comply with this law will be fined € 1,500.

This seems ridiculously over the top? That will kill off an entire market over the top. Halfords etc still have a fair old range of modifications for cars, as does any vague car related shop.
Alloys, speakers, infotainment? I have a black grill on my BMW? Quite fancy some mild tints etc. I'm now a criminal in waiting?

Where is the story?
For atleast the last decade there have been various website repeatedly making similar claims about the UK
it never happens
If it was happening, I'm sure I'd have seen a hell of a lot of outrage across various French language FB groups and other sources. Nada. For atleast the last decade there have been various website repeatedly making similar claims about the UK

I saw a piece the other day claiming that it was now illegal to sell used car parts in Spain, unless you were a registered and authorised breakers.
That was complete b
ks, unsurprisingly, too.Googling the date in the OP comes up with this...

Even ignoring the bit about the measure being voted "unanimously" by the government, we don't need to look very far to see what's happened.
Given that other top stories on the site include the EU allowing frontex coastguards to shoot at migrant boats, France is building a "Guantanamo", and Da'esh has claimed the crappy weather as their doing, it seems a safe bet that people have been suckered by a fairly mediocre parody news site.

Isn't it France, and / or Belgium, where performance modifications have been illegal for a couple of decades which is why the French / Belgian modification scene is sometimes rather mental when it comes to the lowering, I.C.E and in particularly the styling / body kit side of modifying.
I remember back in the '90's / early '00's seeing loads of cars where they even went as far as flushing off and removing items like windscreen wipers and in some cases even going as far as headlight / taillight deletions.

This is the English version of the website. It's a prank site where you write fake articles and publish them to fool your friends. So in other words it's BS
To quote their "about" section - "This website is an entertainment website, news are created by users. These are humourous news, fantasy, fictional, that should not be seriously taken or as a source of information."

I have the same recollection. I remember back in the '90's / early '00's seeing loads of cars where they even went as far as flushing off and removing items like windscreen wipers and in some cases even going as far as headlight / taillight deletions.
If they want to get heavy-handed I would think they could probably make it illegal to drive anything that isn't type approved or is outside of its European type approval in France... we are fortunate that in the UK we have a fairly free-hand in modifications and one-offs compared to our European brethren, but even if it isn't strictly above board the French do have form in stropping off home with their ball if they don't like things. E.g. the ban on proper beef because it wasn't namby-pamby girl beef, or the insistence on NF breathalysers instead of CE ones.
