After the increase in points for mobile phone use while driving, do you think in the near future we will be getting more points and fines for say 15 mph over NSL on the motorway? I do think this will happen at some point.

No. They just recently made some tweaks to fines and that would have been an opportunity.

One step at a time maybe? Probably 5-7 years to go.

I think that they will yes - it seems that there is a direct link between the number of cops on the road, the chance of been caught vs the penalty for been caught.

Ie, the less cops on the road reduces the chance of been caught
People know that there are less cops on the road and so a further deterrent is required.
Increasing points and fines is that deterrent.

Hasn't stopped people using their phones at the wheel

I agree there are now fewer traffic police on the roads but they have been replaced with technology (i.e. cameras) and as a consequence I personally think the chances of being caught for speeding are now higher not lower than was the case (say) 25 years ago.

That said I can certainly see the penalties for speeding being ratcheted-up over time and I rather suspect the ultimate agenda is to push people into driverless cars where the occupants are unable to exceed the speed limit even if they want to. No doubt that day will be welcomed by some but all a touch Orwellian to me I'm afraid...

I agree with this. I just don't understand why.

But on the other hand, if they did that the revenue stream would vanish, and billions of pounds worth of equipment would be useless

Most of the current revenue that comes from motorists is a result of fuel duty and road tax and presumably that would continue to be the case with driverless cars? Fines from speeding are also a source of revenue for the exchequer but I suspect the amount raised from that is peanuts in the context of annual expenditure on things like NHS, Education, etc.

Do you really think they won't have a replacement income source for driverless cars? I'll bet they're sitting around dreaming up new ways of raping your wallet as we even discuss it...

It's rather more that 'a touch' Orwellian to me I'm afraid. A thousand curses on government and their wretched control freakery.
