There is a sequence of bends near me on a NSL road
The kind where one could quite easily get "a bit giddy" back in the day and have a bit of fun

For a couple of years there has been a wiggly bend sign in a triangle, with "for 3/4 mile" underneath it and below this a rectangular box saying "max speed 40mph"

Ive never really given it any thought until today when I came round the final bend in a queue of traffic moving at 40mph (phew) to see a camera van pointing its lens straight at anyone exiting the bend

As its unlikely that anyone would be going in excess of 60mph at the exit due to the radius then I can only deduce that they were looking to book people going over 40

If this is the case I will certainly be more vigilant when I see rectangular "max speed" signs on bends rather than the more conventional circular formal speed limit signs

Comments??

As it's an NSL, then you're not speeding if you're doing 60 coming out of the bend. The "Max speed 40" in in white rectangle under another sign is advisory. 60 may be classed as something else by a police officer and perhaps a court if you stick it through the hedge but it's not speeding

Or you could revisit your knowledge of the Highway Code and understand what a compulsory vs advisory speed limit sign is.

presumably they are pointing thier lens at anyone existing the bend, or anywhere along the straight up until the next bend

Exactly this, however they were so close to the bend itself so as to make their presence obvious as you came round it and the bend is so tight as to make 70mph fairly impossible which is where my uncertainty came from

Cheers!

Speed awareness courses have a nice section in them regarding speed limits and how to tell what they are. That might help biggrin

I have found that police put speed checks out in response to resident's complaints about excessive speed so maybe there have been reports of people using the wiggly stretch for a cheap track-day experience.

or maybe they put the van in a very prominent place to catch people speeding and not paying attention

Or just to be a visible deterrent to over enthusiastic driving.
