Early May got the renewal form from DVLA to retax SWMBO's car, so I went on-line to do it. Part way through the process I realised the MoT is due so booked it in to my local garage and they did it a few days later. Passed with no advisories. So good news there.

I was only this morning that SWMBO asked if I had done it during May. Told her not to be silly, of course I had. The while she was out I double checked. And I'd not done it. Obviously forgot all about it so I did it there and then, but it's the 4th today and SHOULD have been done by the first.

So, what'll happen? Will I be dragged off to Siberia or hanged, drawn and quartered? Or anything at all?

Anyone any ideas or suggestions if I should apologise before the cotton on and send me a swingeing fine ?

I assume you have now done it online? If so, nothing will happen.

Absolutely nothing.

I did the same, put the reminder down and it got buried in paperwork. Drove around for about a month before realising.

Using lots of main roads etc, so almost certainly would have been picked up on some anpr cameras.

Renewed online no problem.

I forgot to tax one of my bikes a few years ago, I didn't receive the reminder and the bike was not being used as I was rebuilding the engine so it hadn't been on the road without tax.

A couple (or three) weeks later I realised what I'd done so I went online and taxed it, still from the beginning of the month meaning no loss to DVLA. I received a communication from DVLA telling me that I had committed an offence and that the bottom inspectors'compliance' team would be contacting me.

I was given an £80 fine for not taxing/sorning, an amount that was actually more than the tax at the time, I called the number given but they would only discuss payment methods.

I don't know if there's a time 'allowance' up to which they let it go?

Good luck...

You'll have to tax it online and it will simply be backdated. Do that now/asap before any reminders arrive in the post. Basically, you will be required to start the tax from the point it expired, you can't SORN in arrears, for example someone runs a car for a month with no tax, then declares SORN when the month is up - and then retax the car, effectively having a month with no tax.

However you will have your hands chopped off.....

But do it online before penalties start arriving.

Not relevant to the OP as I expect he will be fine, but I had the same as you with a bike a few years ago. Unused over Winter, didn't even think about it and it would never have been an issue in an earlier life. I also had the £80 demand for a bike that hadn't left the garage for four months. Another poorly thought out law in action.

She'll find out she was right and you were wrong, they always do. Then you'll never be allowed to live it down. This is probably the worst possible outcome from this.

Last year before I sold my car I completely forgot to tax it. It ran out 1st May and I sold it mid-May. The day before I sold it I drove to work as usual and came across 3 police cars in the space of a 15 minute journey - not one of them stopped me.

I suppose I got a little lucky there...
