Hi PHers,

My mum (70+) is to have her lounge carpet cleaned and I have just seen a quote for £150 quoting 2.5hrs setup and 90 for the actual clean. This seems quite expensive based on a quick google but we all know how inaccurate that can be.

Is this ballpark for 1 room? - room is about 4 * 5m and carpet is nothing fancy not deep pile. Gear used is apparently Karcher.

Quit tempted to keep my nose out as she seems happy but I don't like the thought of someone taking advantage of her.

Hire a carpet cleaner and do it yourself?

I had a complete house done exactly a year ago for £160. The guy was at it for a good half day and brought a huge industrial machine.

You can buy a decent domestic machine for less than £200 and they're pretty good, too. I bought a Vax one and it's great.

Only reason I got someone in last year was lack of time and the size of the place (would spend a lot of time emptying the domestic machine).

Our carpet fitted recommended a guy at £50/room including a deep clean and then ''washing in' of some form or revitalising something or other to ensure the wool remains healthy. I was sceptical so did it myself at half that.

Hmm sounds like she is being ripped a little bit but I suspect if I poke my oar in she will accuse me of meddling. And he is coming tomorrow...tempted to call him up for a similar quote then ask why he charged my mum £150, maybe mutter a bit about rogue traders and then write an accurate but poo google review. What would the chiseled company directors of PH do?

If she's of sound mind, can afford the cost, and is going to be mad at you for interfering, then I don't see any upside in you getting involved - unless you're going to offer to do the job yourself.

What does the 2.5 hours setup involve? Are they assembling the cleaner from its component parts?

bought a half decent wet vac for our rented property and just use that all the time now we are in rented as well. I have had tenancies that say must have invoice from cleaner company but never had to prove as they are happy with how clean it is.

Have done friends carpets and lent it sister if she paid for the cleaning fluid.

Cost me less £200 and cleaned about 5 houses with it.

The only reason to get a pro is if your carpet is realy deep clean if its been abused. In that case your often better off with new carpet.

The pro ones do a better job but not needed on 70% of houses I have been to as they are kept quite clean.

Presumably moving all the furniture out of the way too...

Far too much

Most carpet cleaners won't come out just for a living room unless they are short of work as it does take time to set up, however we would never have charged for that!

I would say between £50 - £70 for a living room as a single room would be acceptable. We had a minimum charge of £60.

If she is happy and its a good clean the guy over egg his quote. Has she paid?

If he didn't do a good job then clearly she has been fleeced.

Indeed, very expensive.

It should only be around a fiver to do a room that size.

THIS is a good point, and something a lot of us hear are probably assuming - an empty room. If they think it is actually going to take 2.5 hours to clear the room, then time to put it back together again then the cost adds up & suddenly £150 isn't as bad. My local guy at £50 a room was presuming the room was empty, and if not he was cleaning around the furniture in place.

If it's a couple of sofas, a couple of small tables and a rug or two that can be shunted out the way & shunted back then fair enough - only you can judge on the time it would take to clear the room/move it around.

Are they moving all the furniture cleaning and putting back? If so it's probably not far off acceptable. The guy we use charges £50 - £75 a room but I move furniture out of the way and with 2 under 3's it's well worth it.

Honestly, hire a Rug Doctor from Homebase/Tesco etc. I did my whole place and it cost £25 (I think) for the 24hr hire. The carpets looked in good shape to be honest, I am a clean freak anyhow but it was amazing to see what the Rug Doctor pulled out, and the colour difference afterwards (cream carpet). I stopped half way through one room to take a look and it was like someone had drawn a line right down the middle.

The detergent is expensive I think, personally (about £10-£15), but you aren't locked to the Rug Doctor brand, you can use anything.

I now hire one once a year as part of general home maintenance, and you wouldn't know that the carpets hadn't just gone down, albeit we have no kids but we have a few wild parties throughout the year.

So, worst is worst you spend around £40 for the day plus some elbow grease. It's a heavy bit of kit though, so I'd recommend that you do it for your Mum.

i would of thought around the £50 is about right but as said by others thats assuming a completely clear room.
If they are moving furniture out and then back in etc then that is where the extra cost might come in, specially if there is some heavy stuff and 2 people need to attend.

I had the carpets in a hall, lounge, two staircases and two landings cleaned a couple of months back. Based on what I paid I'd say that was a reasonable price for a lounge only with furniture removal and replacement.
