Evening folks, lad who works for myself had an accident last night, nobody was injured, police came out, he hadn't been drinking, they said he was ok speed wise, so no issues at all.

However what he says caused the accident I've never heard of before, I've no reason to doubt, and I'm not really sure why I'm concerning myself with it, just such a strange version of events I thought I'd throw it out there for you lot to look over.

Ok, so, straight bit of road, 30 mph, dry conditions, rear wheel drive car, when all of a sudden the osr wheel locks up, now which way would you expect the car to go. Left or right.

Right. Offside locks up so the nearside, which isn't locked up, tries to overtake it.

  • If* the scenario occurred, then by my reckoning the car would veer right. OSR (right) wheel locks, essentially that would slow down the RHS of the car, LHS continues at greater speed, ergo car veers to right.

As I thought, general opinion seems to be right, I thought I was being thick hence throwing it out to you guys.

However, as you can see, it took him left, putting the front of car into a small metal fence, bringing the back round until it smashed into the kerb with aforementioned osr wheel.

Anybody want to guess what caused the rear wheel to lock in the first place.

Assuming he wasn't braking, as others have said. If he was braking the opposite if anything.

But then if he felt it start to swerve he may steer in the opposite direction to correct it and overdo it giving the opposite result.

Are they Porsche calipers on the rear of what appears to be an e46 M3 (or are they reps fitted on a non M3)? Or has a decal been stuck on the standard caliper? Also the calipers are painted, when was that done? Could be related to issue.

Alternative to the official account. Stamp on the go pedal, traction control off. Will follow that line no question.

If the wheel locked while he was braking, that tyre would have damn-near-zero grip, so the wheel which was still actually gripping would pull the back towards the kerb - so the tyre marks make sense.

Wheel bearing seizing? Something getting wedged between caliper and disk?
