Notwithstanding what went on before or after, is this considered "reasonable force?"

What happened prior is part of the picture that determines whether the force may be reasonable or not.

Just a thought, but not shoplifting when pregnant would have avoided the whole thing..

..or if you have to shoplift, not resisting when caught.

I'm sure if she had stolen something from one of the loud bystanders they wouldn't care how she was handled!

"Why are you shoplifting while pregnant you stupid bh?"

If that was being shouted by the crowd i'd still have a bit of faith in humanity.

It's disturbing to see the sensationalistic reporting of just about every trivial little day to day incident captured by a bystander with a smartphone, and the frenzied outrage that tends to follow. I think the plain clothes security guy should be given a medal for doing his job in the face of a baying mob.

She went in to a shop,

She had a choice,

Buy or steal,

She chose the latter,

She got caught,

Pregnant or not she broke the law,

No sympathy warranted.

I'd say that was reasonable force. He doesn't hit her or throw any strikes. Just detains and puts on the floor.

Was that, as the ITV title puts it a "brawl" - because if it is I need to update my definition.

That must mean I'm brawling with my kids when I try to get their coats and shoes on in the morning....

I get the feeling the OP may have expected a different response.

It's only a matter of time before Glenfell gets called for what it's become, and that's a pity for the genuine and reasonable victims.

Yes it is going that way, sadly. Complaints that judge is a technocrat? Surely that is what you need? To me it is something like, cladding was swapped for less effective type, cladding type has same category fire retardant value on paper but not in real life testing, and (my view) cladding passes as a component, but is very dependent on the system it is built into.

It would seem by admitting assault, she is the one that didn't use "reasonable force"

She can be heard telling the officer that she didn’t have any stolen goods, before being escorted into the store.

West Midlands Police confirmed that they attended the scene and that a woman was charged with theft and assaulting a security guard.

Adams, of Wordsworth Road, Small Heath, received a six-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to the two offences when she appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Says all you need to know.

And after she's had the baby, she'll be hiding her shoplifting in the pushchair and screaming blue murder if anyone dares go near.
I saw a delightful creature attempt just this, screaming at passers by that the security guard was a sex offender who just wanted to touch up her baby girl

She's probably rolling in benefits as well.
