Strange one this..I have a female aquaintance whos life is being destroyed by her estranged and wayward sister.

Said sister knows everything about my aquaintance and uses that information to her advantage.

I have seen the credit reports, and credit checks one after the other as the sister applies for credit cards and mobile phones etc.

Whats really strange is that sister has even purchased mobile phones in my freunds name, but using a bank card in her own name! Then the direct debit gets cancelled and my freind is chased for the balance! How does that work???

The police have been contacted many times but have been inneffectual ' civil offence innit' seems to be the attitude.

She has the credit agencies looking into it but the crimes continue. Her credit rating is absolutely destroyed and as a result she cant sell her house and buy another another one that she desperately needs to do as she also has a growing family which she supports by working her arse off in a golf club restaurant.

Really just looking for any useful suggestions that she may not have thought of.

I am sure this will raise more questions and i have some more details which she has sent me, i will just need to trawl through emails and stuff she has forwarded.

Changing her bank would help as the sister wouldn't know about that.

Might also be worth informing the credit reference agencies so they can put a marker on her record.

For reference, i dont think the fraudster is actually using the sisters bank details.

Credit agencies have been informed, and say they are on the case.

restraining order?
injunction?

I think you need to go legal.

I'd go back to the police and raise it as harassment - formal complaint if they still wont act.

Don't get involved.

It's nothing to do with you.

Tell him/her/them to consult a solicitor or to contact the police.

Don't get involved.

It's nothing to do with you.

Did I mention that you shouldn't get involved?

Repeat cases of fraud are not a civil matter they are criminal! Perhaps Action Fraud might be able to help - if your friend can give them all the evidence they need on a plate maybe they will take action.

I think the credit agencies need to pull their finger out and set up some sort of cross check with your friend. Can they perhaps require a password check to be passed before confirming to phone, credit card companies etc that you are who you say you are.

As to moving house - presumably she has a mortgage with a particular company. I hope she has net every single payment and never defaulted in anyway? She should arrange a meeting with that company, take whatever evidence she can that the sister is a fraudster with her and explain the situation. Explain she is working on getting her charged and clearing the bad markers. Surely they will have seen similar before and that way they ought to be able to support her new mortgage application.

Good luck to her!

Part of the problem is that the frauds are against the mobile phone companies etc. rather than your acquaintance so the complaint needs to come from them.

Police would need to prove that the sister intended to cause her sister a loss or put her at risk of loss, not easy to do when there's a more obvious gain motive. Damage to her credit rating doesn't count.

we live in a civil society, not a police state. Citizenship has responsibilities and privileges.
Sometimes you stand up to be counted, especially when a friend is involved.

Can you not register with the credit agencies, dispute and have removed the false records, and be notified of new abuses as they happen?

I think she is trying to do that but it is turning into a full time job, and is very stressful.

Her sister must really have a grudge!

He didn't say it was a friend.

He said it was an acquaintance.

However.

Shrug.

Seems an odd way to express a grudge, given she can be in legal trouble too, sounds more like a worthless scumbag who thinks nothing of stealing from wherever they can, friends and family included and frankly makes a case for all sorts of less progressive punishments.

i thought credit agencies had this sort of live monitoring down pat but in honesty never tried it, rank it alongside british gas homecare services where it's more about selling paranoid people peace of mind rather than anything that represents value for money, although in this case it may have a usefull application.

Well, I thought this was an internet discussion forum and different people expressed different points of view.

Was I wrong?

I wasn't rude, or insulting, or offensive. I am suggesting that, in the main, people should sort their own affairs out.

Surely these mobile phones, credit cards etc are all going to be delivered to the 'dodgy' address.
Isn't this a simple case of your friend telling them to prove it was her and telling them it was her sister. Delivery address, contact numbers on the phone bill etc will all point the blame to the the dodgy sister with little digging required.
