I came across this and wondered what the PH collectives thoughts were. Read on:

Dept of Transport

The Departments priorities should be to support the economy by ensuring the provision of efficient, reliable and safe transport systems. This includes:

-Reducing road congestion

-Increasing Rail and Bus use

-Cutting journey times on London Underground

-Reducing numbers Killed and Seriously Injured in road accidents

-Improving air Quality

What are your thoughts on reading this?

Reading betwen lines means that they want everybody to stop driving and use the crappy public transport.
The reducing congestion bit does not mean spending money on roads!

LU is the responsibility of TfL, not DfT.

What is Transport for London?
Transport for London (TfL) is the integrated body responsible for the capital's transport system. Its role is to implement the Mayor's Transport Strategy for London and manage the transport services across the capital for which the Mayor has responsibility.

TfL is directed by a management board whose Members are chosen for their understanding of transport matters and appointed by Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, who chairs the TfL Board.

What does TfL do?

TfL manages ... the Underground ...

DfT doesn't get a look in.

some report said:

-Reducing road congestion
As I understand it, many local authorities specific policy is deliberately the opposite. They seek to increase congestion as much as possible, not through incompetence, but on purpose, to discourage car use.

some report said:
-Reducing numbers Killed and Seriously Injured in road accidents
So why the massive increase in scameras, hand in hand with a reduction in traffic Policing? A policy gauranteed to achieve (very successfully) totally the opposite.

OK all, I apologise, for I've been dangling a baited hook in the water so to speak.

The post above comes from "The James Committee" report and is the official view of the Concervative party and Mr Howard. It is their manifesto document. Do a google for it and read for yourself.

It only goes to re-enforce my view that whilst you can change the Govt, you can't change the policy makers who advise them, so you get the same policies, and our policy for the next 50 yrs has already been mapped out by "think tanks".

As far as the promised: "revue of speed cameras" goes. I think it would amount to: "Well, those 5 out of 50 are in the wrong place, take them out" But, are they going to: throw them away then? Nah! they'll just put them back somewhere else. We'll not get rid of them so easy folks.

I was going to suggest a read of the DFT site, some interesting future developements to come there. But BJM beat me to it

Oh! Forgot, 9/10 s2art! You missed: KSI's = more speed cameras

Well takes about three years for any new Treasury policy to work its way through (which is why Gordon had an easy time to start with) ... and these days, Treasury policy drives everything else. If the civil servants tell an incoming Conservative Chancellor that without the income from scameras he'll have to increase the duty on claret, brandy, oranges, BDSM masks and gas capes ... guess what he'll do!
