Does anyone know the regulations regarding the placement of skips on the road? Warnings, flashing lights, proximity to junctions etc.

You need a license. It is certainly the case with Herts CC that you can apply online.

Yup, usually issued on a £££ per week basis so not too many questions asked cos they like the £££. Should be lit at night, strictly speaking.

And if you live in Bristol, they may require traffic lights on narrow roads. Luckily they changed their minds when we pointed out the road was one way

In a nut shell:

Highways Act 1980 s 139:

Builders skip not to be deposited on a highway WITHOUT the PERMISSION of local Council.

Such permission by LA may contain requirements as to siting, dimensions, steps to make visible by painting etc., care and control of contents, how it is to guarded and lit at night, removal details at end of permission.

Owner of skip has to ensure when deposited (with permission)properly lit during hours of darkness, owners name and telephone number clearly displayed, removed promptly and all requirements set out in LA permission is adhered to.

I only ask because I crashed into one last week It was extremely badly positioned - opposite a bus stop which is next to a T-junction with a hatched 'ghost island' for right turners (there is also a kerbed area at the beginning of this area for a street lamp approx 10 yards from where the skip was)

For those who know the road it was Doncaster Road, Bawtry on the way onto Bawtry just past Hudson's Yard.

map

Bus stop was at end of Ingham Road on North side

Currently have a skip outside my house on the road! Costs something like £30 for a month and yes, it has to be light and carefully parked, close to the kerb and not at a junction..... obvious parking type regulations.

BUT - had a few in the last couple of months and its alarming the number of warning lights that get nicked! I dont know if there is some sort of illicit trade in them, but within a week they are gone..... quite why, I am not sure, but a call to the skip company and they dutifully come and fix another one, but its a bit of a joke.... You try and comply with the law and some joker screws it all up..... not funny...

The mounting brackets are made of a strange material, which is so soluble in alcohol that even the fumes on the breath of a drunk person walking past can cause it to dissolve. The drunk person, being unable to reattach the lamp to the skip and not wanting to leave stuff lying in the road, is usually forced to take it home for safe keeping.
