Hi everyone
This might sound pretty dumb and obvious, but here's the story:

I upgraded with O2 on Friday, and I normally do this online. However this time I went in-store so I could get the phone right there and then.
After some messing about he gave me 2 options:

1. Phone, Airtime and Insurance Cover for £50/month
2. Phone, Airtime and a Tablet for £48/month

I basically said "I dont want the tablet or insurance, how much without either?" - And he kind of dodged the question, sort of making me think it was some sort of free offer "its because you're in-store and not online, we give offers like this in person"

I did want a tablet, but could do with saving the money right now - the tablet has added on a £4/month charge to my plan (not much but it adds up!)

I havent unboxed it in case I can return it and get a reduction on my monthly costs, what are your thoughts?
Has the guy bullstted me and literally lied to my face, or should I just keep it and stop being an idiot?

Contact O2 and ask them.

He had you. As said, phone O2. Explain the salesman was pushy. They'll let you return it, and tweak your tariff with a couple of clicks of a mouse no problem.

£600 per year for a phone?
If you want to save money, get a cheaper phone. Maybe hang on to your existing one?

You won't get any decent deals in store. I'd return it all (Although not sure if the 14 days grace also applies to instore signups), threaten to leave, see what they offer. Then scour the internet for a deal better than that. The tablet and phone won't necessarily be cheapest together, either.

Some of the 'deals' O2 offer to walk-in customers are terrifying. For reference, this is a reasonable (although not the cheapest) sort of price you'd be paying for an iPhone 7. https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/apple-iphone-7-32...

Honestly return the whole lot and cancel the contract.

You'll get a phone-free only better deal online.

Sounds like salesman was pushy and tried selling you stuff you don't need.

I recommend something like https://www.uswitch.com/mobiles/ or Compare the Market Mobiles.

After 17 years with o2 (or thereabouts) i left them this year.

I felt they are really stiffing customers now on renewals particularly.

I've moved to BT Mobile. 20GB of data, unlimited texts, unlimited minutes, 1 year contract £16 a month (as a BT customer) and a £100 amazon voucher. Contract term one year.

Also, whilst i enjoy a large premium phone, theres no mission i'm going to pay £800 or £900 for a top end Samsung or Apple device, so i imported a Xiaomi Mi Mix, 256GB storage, 6GB RAM, ceramic case, 6.4 inch edge screen, etc for £425.

And when i rang o2 to cancel the girl had the audacity to say "oh you should have rang our retentions team" - no, you should have ensured i had better dealers available, NOT me having to ring YOU and beg for a deal rolleyes
