I live in an Edwardian end of terrace house, the power for my house and 2 of my neighbors comes from a pole at the side of house, our supply is straight from the pole and in to the Fuse, next doors cable comes from the pole and runs under our pitched porch roof very near to our bay window frame, through the 4 gallows brackets which support the porch roof and into next doors main fuse. Then onwards to neighbor number 3 in roughly the same route. Above the porch roof is the lead flashing and then immediately above that flashing are 2 bedroom windows.

I need to replace 1 maybe 2 of the gallows brackets (rotten) and have contacted the electric company to come and move the cable. Their first suggestion was to move it above the porch under the window cills, I refused on the basis that it will be fixed through the flashing.

One of my other concerns is how the cable will get dropped from above the roof to below the roof as the only gap between the two porches is the width of and filled by the gutter down pipe.

I suppose my question is how much can I influence the routing and do I actually have to have neighbours cabling fixed to my house.

Anybody got any advice on where I can start looking for the legal side of the issue.

I think a picture or two would be useful.

As an aside, I think it's quite difficult to get the cables off your house. It would be worth checking your deeds to see if there's a wayleave or an easement. If I remember correctly, a wayleave can be terminated but an easement can't. Either way, I think any costs will be down to you to pay but it's worth checkig this specific point with the energy supplier. You really need to talk to the supplier again.

It is NOT the neighbours cabling actually. It is network electricity or whatever the latest fashionable name for them is

If you cannot get it moved you can always claim wayleave or easement. One is a one-off payment, the other is an annual payment.

How about building new brackets around the cables?

Because that is prohibitively expensive and massively time consuming.

We had some cabling for our neighbours house run along our soffit. The soffit was rotten and when they moved the cables it fell apart. They came back and made replacements as per the original 1955 mahogany and even routered the edges to match the old design.

Great result for me smile

I've now been sent a wayleave agreement to sign so can anyone recommend a law firm that specializes in wayleaves. I don't want to get seen off by this.

Now it’s all about the money?

When you started this thread it was because you were doing some repair / replacement work and the cable was in the way, now it’s a snotty cable and you want more compensation.

Not great.

So decline and ask them to remove it.

This makes me wonder about my neighbours gaspipe which goes under my front garden. I know this because I put a spade through it a couple of years ago when digging a hole for a fence post.

Can I get it moved or charge them for it?

If your drains exit your property and pass though theirs they might charge you for that as well
