Afternoon all,

A friend crashed his car a week ago.
(Genuinely a friend, sadly I can't afford a his car!)

I don't want give too much personal / individual info away just yet as it's still early stages. So the car . . . It's pretty!

Couple of questions surrounding how the insurance works out under the circumstances.

Circumstances;
Went round a roundabout, hit the loud pedal (RWD) a bit too much and hit a kerb and post(s).

Damage;
Side impact. Rear wheel snapped, front wheel buckled, track rod end snapped, post hit the wing and door, airbag in door card and seat went off on that side.

The point of my post;
1. The car is kept at a different address to the one stated on the insurance. One on insurance is family. It is currently at a different address.
2. The TC was off when it crashed. Can this be recorded / noted?
3. Car had a part wrap on it but the same colour as the car and the wheels had been changed in colour. Not on insurance.
4. Police arrived and took statements of onlookers, most statements were false (stating that he'd been drifting numerous times etc but CCTV would disprove this numerous bit) but driver was not breathalysed or questioned. Police followed him home (car was barely drivable owing to chunk from wheel missing and 2x popped tyres and broken track rod).
5. Car is insured fully comp but at £9k less than market value. (God knows why he did this!)
6. Car is worth (on insurance) £29,000. Estimated repair cost (material only) £12k.
7. Insurers have requested an interview. Not interested in seeing that car at this point.

Owing to the above how will he insurance be affected?
Likely outcome?

TIA

Sounds very similar to an incident in another thread, where a young driver of an M3 binned it.

Un-friend.

People that make decisions like this are not good to have around. I hope he is held accountable for his actions.

"Police followed him home (car was barely drivable owing to chunk from wheel missing and 2x popped tyres and broken track rod)"

That was a very understanding plod given the state of the vehicle. Unroadworthy even.

Sometime in the evening.

For what it's worth, he hadn't been drinking.

Not an M3.

I thought this. Especially given the statements taken from onlookers.

Number 1 is his main problem.

If he did that to reduce his premium then it could get tricky.

And also completely undriveable with the broken track rod.

I would assume that with the opposite tyre being inflated and "normal" that that would have the most grip. With the popped tyre / broken track rod end it would just be dragged?

How many times was he drifting the roundabout? And why would witnesses make that up?

Is that another way of saying that yes, the CCTV shows him drifting at least once?

Depends how you look at it - technically once. He joined from the south, exited east.

Don't know. They actually said 3-4 times. CCTV would show him entering and exiting. Well, not quite exiting . . .

Not going to be an issue. It might be if it was nicked while parked overnight, but...

Does the policy say he can't turn it off?

He can probably expect to get any extra premium they'd have charged him if he'd declared the mods taken out of the payout, and he won't get the wrap re-done on their tab or the wheel(s) repainted from standard.

VERY surprised they let him drive it home... Whether he gets prosecuted or not is separate to the claim.

Since it's not particularly close to being a write-off, it's unlikely there'll be an issue. If it was written off, he'd get the lower value.

Technically, I guess, yes. He didn't deviate from his intended direction. Entered from the south and exited, albeit sideways, to the east.

But, basically - yes, he was drifting, and fked it up.

He's going to be having an uncomfortable chat with the police in the future... Whether he has a chat with a magistrate or just sends a letter is up to him...
