Right so two months ago the missus had a crash into a stationary car just down the road from where we live. There was a fair bit of damage on the other car and I had to scrap mine as the repair cost was too much.

I privately paid out for the repairs on the other car and I thought that was that.

Now a guy who lives near the scene says that at the time we hit his car too. His car was on the opposite side so after bouncing off the first parked car we did head towards his and the bumper may have scraped his but aside from that nothing more.

At the time of the accident I was there for a while sorting out the details of the repair. (it was a friend of mine who owned the car). At no time did this guy say that we had hit his. However my friend did tell me a few days later that he'd mentioned that we had scraped his car and since it wasn't bad he was ok with it and wasn't going to persue it any further. So I left it.

So tonight I got a text off this 2nd guy who is now saying that not only did we hit his car but we hit another car too and he has the cctv to prove it.

I've said with regards to his car if he gets quotes with the respray and i'll happily pay for them. With regards to this 2nd car I'd like to see the cctv as I don't recall this car being in the pathway.

For some reason he's begun to be very very awkward. Rather than showing me the cctv he's now insisting he is going to be goin to the police and reporting my wife for failing to stop and is goin to hand the cctv to them as we apparently fled the scene.

Now with regards to the police thing I'm not worried as I have plenty of witnesses to say i was there for over an hour as well as multiple times throughout the evening. I live about 200 yards away from the scene. The whole street came out to see what had happened so the chances of me and my wife fleeing are second to none.

I just don't get what this guys game is. I've offered to repair the damage but he seems to be keen on pushing for the failing to stop angle.

I've spoken to a solicitor mate and he's basically told me not to reply any further to this guy without third parties.

I just wanted some advice from PH as to what next?

The simplest explanation must be that that he is a chancer and that the CCTV footage (if it exists) would show that you did not hit his car, let alone another?

I was half expecting you to say this guy was now claiming he was in sat in his stationary car at the time and was now making a claim for whiplash.

Ignore him. Sounds like an utter bellend.

Let him go to the police (unlikely) with the CCTV he has (which he probably doesn't have) which will backup your events.

I reckon he has heard about what happened and is chancing getting some previous damage repaired at your expense.

If he was reasonable he would show you the CCTV and then you would most likely say, no problem i will pay for the repairs. However his reluctance seems a bit of a bluff. If he does go to the police then they may ask the question why it has taken him 2 months to realise his car has been hit.

My advice would be to let him get on with it. If anything comes of it then the police will knock on your door and it can be dealt with. Common sense would prevail you didnt leave the scene as you dealt with the owner of vehicle that was hit.

I wouldnt worry about it

I agree with Pavarotti.

Either the guy overheard about your generous cash settlement or the original bloke told him and suggested he get himself a bit of the action too.

Who owns the 3rd car? What is he asking for?

That's what's coming next. Get on to insurers. Explain position, apologise profusely for not reporting it to them initially, and hope they agree to deal with it even though you've prejudiced their position by part settling the claim.

I would call his bluff and tell him to go to the police and show the footage to them if he won't show it to you.

What do you think the police will do then, launch an investigation?

So what if they do, OP has done his bit, he has nothing to fear from the police.

OP, I would put money on the police doing absolutely nothing. They'll just say nobody wan injured and it's a civil matter.

He won't have CCTV - if he had, he'd have volunteered this info at the very start and would have let you watch it.

Ignore him from now on unless he's prepared to be reasonable about the scrape you caused to his first car.

The Police will do fk all. I reported someone hitting my car and driving to off to the Police in July. Still nothing. In that time, I traced the insurers, got my car repaired and back on the road.

Why did you pay out for the repairs and accept your car being written off? That's a big financial hit to take.

If your mate is a solicitor why do you need advice if a bunch of anonymous people on here, most of whom will be far less qualified?

No cctv evidence no cash.

Probably get shouted down but was speaking to a solicitor about a matter last week and he informed me that cctv covering anything but your own land is a big no no. He said its one of those things that lots of people do and nothing happens unless complained about. In this case it may be worth researching if he takes it futher. I had no need of this information so didnt pursue it.

But if the primary purpose is to cover your own land then that will be fine. What the issues would be are how the information is stored and how it is used after recording. So deleting images when no longer necessary (every week, 14 days, month etc) and how it is stored during the interim. You would be classed as the data controller so some issues surround that.
