o.k got caught speeding first time in 19 years driving, i have the card type licence but on the form it states i have to send my licence off as well.

Knowing the royal mail it will end up lost and the Police take no responsibility to any lost items if they receive it. Do i really have to send it off?

Were you pulled over? If so you could have given the officer your licence there and then.

Yes, you have to send it off if they ask.

No, send it Special Delivery to be safe. Signed for and tracked all the way. Common sense says use Special Delivery for any important packages, certainly all to DVLA.

If you do not send it off you will fail to meet the 'send £100 and your licence' part of the fixed penalty process. They will refund your £100 and take you to court for 3 points and much more cash.

Latest set of figures shows 0.008% of mail is lost.

How much mail is posted through the wrong letter box though?

If this was your first time, then are they not offering a Speed Awareness Course? If so, take it, and you'll not need to send off your licence

If no conditional offer, then you'll be sending to your local enforcement company who will update your licence, and have it back to you in around 2 - 3 weeks

I think that's the OP's point. As his licence is a piece of plastic, they won't actually be modifying it, so what's the point of sending it?

That's true, but in my situation I was more than happy to hand it over there and then.

Very true there is something that the OP is concealing I guess

Despite it being 'a piece of plastic' you still have to send it off, not sure why as they do nothing with it, but it is a requirement of the current law. This is true for any offence that results in points on your driving record.
