If I wanted to report a persistent drink driver...

Does anyone know what number I call?

I live in London?

I had a look at the Met web site but I couldn't find any info....

nonegreen probably wouldn't think like that if said driver mowed down one of nearest and dearest whilst pissed out of his skull.

How 'drink driver'?

You say persistent, on that note Im with you. But you dont say by how much your friend is over the limit.

Id rather leave someone who had had a couple to himself, im not that anal tbh.

If the bloke drank 10 pints every night and drove home, then you drfinitely should act for obvious reasons.

Whats the score?

deltafox provided an answer to the question.

Whether or not to report someone directly to the police is a matter for your conscience.

There are other approaches, but arguing whether someone who drinks and drives - one of PH members' biggest 'No-noes' - can easily provide material that the anti-motorist lobbies and media will happily misconstrue.

Phone the lcoal cop shop, tell them where and when the driver is usually drink driving.
Driving whilst unfit through drink is stupid. I'm surprised at some of the previous comments. This site, and most of its members, support improved road safety through higher standards of driving! Unless i'm missing something, alcohol doesn't imrove your driving unless 5 pints of wife beater turns you into the Stig

Can't believe some of the comments here

"More important contributions to society" Perhaps, you just better hope that Mr. Persistant Drink Driver doesn't mow anyone down that you know.

"Turn yourself in for speeding" Rubbish analogy. Drink driving is dangerous all the time, speeding sometimes.

Hmmm. Speeding does not always cause an accident, but sometimes it does.
Drink driving does not always cause an accident, but sometimes it does.
Speeding, as an offence, is driving above an arbitrary limit, which may or may not be the safe limit.
Drink driving, as an offence,is driving above an arbitrary limit, which may or may not be the safe limit.

There is a lot of similarity there.

The big difference is in the increase in probability of an accident as the level of drink increases.

On average, at the drink drive limit, you are about 4% more likely to have an accident. But the curve increases very steeply from there...

There are a lot of other factors affecting driving which cause a lot more than a 4% increase in the probability of an accident - tiredness, prescription drugs, etc.

To answer the question, it depends on the severity of the drink driving. 2.5 pints and drive? Debatable...

That's what I was trying to get at, thanks. Serious drink driving (ie not just at / over the limit) is completely irresponsible.

What I really don't understand is Broccers problem with reporting a drunk driver? What goes through your mind when you don't do something about it?

"Oh, it'll probably be o.k. he's only had a few. I don't think he'll have an accident."

I found this web page with drink driving penalties in other counties both interesting and scary.

Take a look.

If its a mate, you dont, its that simple. You have a word, give him a slap if neccesary but dont grass, its just not cricket.

If its not a mate but someone you have observed doing this then fill your boots.

Why that advice?

Surely the same repsonse should be given to either a mate or someone you don't know!

Either have a word with both or grass on both. Better still, have a word with both and if it fails to have the desired effect, grass on both!

Why should mates be treated any different in something which is as life or death as this is?

I understand the point you are making but its a little easier to self police your mates than it is the general public.

One can enforce a concept of justice without resorting to the justice system but I would suggest this only holds for people you know.
