Just wondering if you have been up in court before and how you felt before it?

I have court on Monday for drink driving and criminal damage and have to say I feel a bit nervous about it as it is my first time in court.

I have been told to wear a suit so I will but is that a bit overkill? Did your case make the local papers afterwards?

Suit and tie in sober colours is a good idea. You want to distance yourself as far as possible from the normal tracksuited scum who frequent these places.

Don't think on a DD conviction it really matters.
Stupid stupid stupid.

But for the OP yes be apologetic, wear a nice suit, blue tie, hang head in shame etc.

Mags is boring. Crown is much better.

OP, do you have a solicitor / have you taken legal advice?

Yep been in court when I was 18 for speeding 87mph in a temporary 50mph on the motorway

Got 5 points and £230 fine

Wore a suit and got a solicitor and they said because I presented myself well and took it seriously by getting a solicitor

Not sure if it will make a difference with drink driving!

Well I'm happy enough only to be in Magistrates Court!

Yes I got a solicitor - having to pay for him as well

Coroners court is as scary as fk. I've had to be an expert witness for a fatal crash in bucks and I did not like it one bit.

My mrs is a lawyer and bloody loves it. Coroners court is her favourite. It just made me feel sick.

I would have thought with you working for the Prison Service, you would have had access to plenty of people who would be able to give you a more informed answer hehe

I always got wound up and was frequently sick beforehand, and I was a police prosecution witness so the magistrates could do little against me apart from give me a 'seriously displeased' stare.

Follow what the brief says, especially as to address to the court. The magistrates do an excellent job in the main and deserve some respect.

The one thing I'd say is insincerity doesn't work for most people. Be yourself, but a bit muted.

Suit is good.

Suit up. I've been to court loads of times, it amazes me the amount of times the defendant turns up in jeans or trackies. Better to be over dressed than under dressed.

In regards to local newspapers it depends where you live.
The edp like to publish details of drink drivers.
If you miss it the first time they very nicely do a monthly round up

It depends on the side of the dock you're standing on.

I was 'bumped' from Mags to Crown Court in the dim and distant..

Richmond to Kingston BTW, so altogether a more civilised experience.

Although, I do remember that it wasn't a pleasant feeling hearing, 'we don't have sufficient sentencing powers'.

if it's any help to the OP, if you are guilty, plead it (if you haven't already done so) Dress smartly, be contrite and show remorse.

I was in and out of three different Courts over four years albeit for family issues.

I ALWAYS wore a suit and behaved respectfully and politely at all times.

The number of people that turned up in track suits and sporting large quantities of Argos jewelry never ceased to amaze me.
In some cases the fact that some of these people actually managed to find the Court never ceased to amaze me !

At one point I turned up suitably clad to be told that my client hadn't yet arrived - had to point out that in fact I was the client !

You have legal advice. Follow it.

You have a decent suit that doesn't say 'Saturday night special' or that you borrowed off your fat cousin wear it. Also wear a smart tie, nothing loud or that merits attention.

Groom. One thing to look hung over and in need of a comb at work, Mags, especially Stipes (should you be 'lucky' enough), may or may not note that you have taken the effort to look like you are taking the Court seriously, but sure as heck will note if you don't.
