Basically as above, looking to park outside some shops where I'm due to meet someone, see a gap, indicate and stop, select reverse and proceed to parallel park, when bump, guy behind has moved forward and removed the gap, now obviously I've hit him so down to me, I jump out, usual shouting from us both through his window which he then rolls down, just him and a small child in the front seat of a mk2 astra, I then get back into my car to pull into the kerb to allow the backed up cars behind to disperse, and he simply drives off and around the corner ...... and thats the last I see of him, I'm sitting there at least ten mins as I'm waiting for someone to arrive at his shop, and then at least ten mins speaking to this guy, at no time did the other car owner come back, and I have no registration number of the car, so what next,? I'm thinking he has no insurance? Do I do anything or not?

He deliberately moved forward. Knows the impact will be slow.

What's the bet that he has yours and will seek to make a claim via an ambulance chaser?

Give your insurer a heads up.

Police a more important consideration?

I was in a relatively similar position. In my case, I reported it to the Police within 24 hours.

I explained I was 99% there’d been no contact but wasn’t certain. Reported it just in case. Nothing happened.

What level of damage are we talking about? Ive had two people drive into the back of my stationary van this year. No visible real damage to me so shrugged and told them to jog on. Not worth the hassle. Merc appear to make their bumpers well if little else.

Mine has a painted bumper which has had a small scuff and paint removed about the size of a pound coin, his was a plain grey unpainted bumper, and I doubt there was any damage due to the low speed ...... but I never got to check, no details exchanged and leaving the scene plays against him in the event of a future claim no?

My best guess is that he wasn't that bothered or thought it would be his fault for moving. You won't hear anything more about it.

Or he wasn't legal to drive on the road in the first place....

No that is unusual.

The usual is to talk rather than shout smile Astra mk2 means it is a snotter and he won't care about bumps. You could chase it, but without number plate witnesses don't know how much joy you will have.

Did mention window was up, hard to talk through that with the associated traffic noise as well ....

The bumpers on Mk2 Astras were nice rugged flexible things, very resistant to such knocks, so the other driver wont be too worried.

Not seen one of those Astras for many a year!

Or maybe all the shouting was distressing the young child in the car and he decides that he felt intimidated enough that he didn't want to stay there anymore?? Probably wouldn't hear anything though, as it's a MK2 astra it'd probably be written off if he made any sort of claim, and to be driving something that old it would be a car he either has sentimental values for it or just plain and simple can't afford to replace it. Either way, any claim and write off would be a lose situation for him

Thought there was a breakthrough when the brains of the house (wife) suggested I checked the dash cam footage, as it might show him driving off and away, but alas it works when ignition on, and having got back in the car to park up properly and having turned the car off, I didn't get a image .....so its wait and see time, I have contacted the local police, no stations open anymore, so 101 or email the options available these days.

Personally I'd call that a bit of a result; under the circumstances I'd just forget about it - unless of course you want to pay a fkton more insurance.

I also suspect that the other driver was not legally on the road.

I would suspect a man who either should not have been driving or at least was driving uninsured and was hissy coz of his kid, nothing more.

Either way if he is driving something that rubbish, I would be more worried about the above than anything else.
