Private Plate Issues
Discussion
My ex purchased a private plate for me for my birthday in August. We broke up last week, and she is now threatening me with messages saying that she is going to cancel my private plate and I need to change it back to my old one.
I have done a bit of searching online but I can't find anything at all, is what she saying correct? I don't think she can but I just want to make sure before I go out driving and get pulled/fined for displaying an incorrect plate.
The main reason she is doing this is she says she wants a refund to get the money back, imo a bit of a bad move seeing as it was a gift. I did offer to buy it off her so I can keep it but that didn't go down too well.

My ex has still got my private plate that I put on her car as I didn't have a spare car available at the time.
Retention isn't a new concept.Personally i go with retention, but that's just me and i can see why others might not.

I'm guessing that chap was talking about a time prior to the last few years when it changed...
Then he needs to keep up at the back then doesn't he....

would appear that I do

It has been a very long time since i had to put a plate on retention and the last 5 cheques i have in my old and dusty chequebook were for the DVLA's retention fee. These days all my plates are on cars save the one i was bought for my last Birthday that is waiting for 3 years before i need to worry about it

if she has a copy of your cars V5C log book she can remove it online without your knowledge, she could have taken the document number without your knowledge.
Easiest way around that is request a duplicate V5C from DVLA (Costs £25) and will have a different document number which means unless she gets a copy of the most recent V5C she cannot remove it without you knowing.
