I believe this has been covered before but can’t find it in search.
Wife’s car was parked in Supermarket, someone tries to park next to her and scrapes down one side of car, rear wing, back door front door all damaged. This someone then reverses back and drives off. Lady witnesses whole thing, takes photo of car that drives off and number plate and reports to Supermarket front desk.
On Wife’s return she sees note from witness detailing what has happened and giving contact details. Wife goes back in and asks if there is CCTV footage available - apparently none, it happens all the time and wife will need to deal with privately.
So the question is what can we do? GuessingPolice won’t be interested? How do we contact owner of car with just make/model/number plate details? Would the police give us this information ? One option is to just forget and move on, whilst I haven’t had a quote, I am guessing damage will be £1500-2000, so would rather not be absorbing that myself!
Thanks in advance?

call your insurer give them the detail its for them to chase.

alternatively open up the akmid site on a mobile and get the insurer details for the car that hit you and go direct.

Police should be interested as it's failing to stop. However likely they'll make sure details are exchanged and leave it at that. Your insurance company may want you to report it (to the Police) anyway.

You can apply for the registered keeper details from the DVLA. might be a fee but you can add it to any claim.

Start a record of all costs you incur including your time and make the bd pay.

In the last 4 weeks I have had someone scrape 3 corners of my car.

They may do more. We saw this happen once whilst waiting for a parking spot at a supermarket. Took the reg, a description of the driver and car details and wrote a note leaving phone number on the damaged vehicle. Just as I did so, the owner returned. She liaised with the police who popped around one evening to take witness statements from me and the wife and they followed it up. Driver was done with leaving the scene, and hubby and wife were done with attempting to pervert the course I think, because they lied about who was driving, and my description was easily good enough to idenitfy the wife.

So definitely worth phoning the local police before speaking to your insurer..

thanks for input - wife just been in contact with witness who has text the photo. Whilst no excuse, it is an old lady who in photo looks petrified, which has made me soften slightly. Have called 101, not much help, need to go to Police Station to report, to then get a Police Crime number which we hand over to insurance. On the phone they said they would not provide details. I guess we need to hand over to insurers...

Yes you do, that's one of the reasons you pay them.

1. Report to police. It doesn't matter if they don't do anything, you need to tick the box.
2. Call your insurance company. Give them all details, pictures, and names/contact details of witnesses.
3. Wait.

She looked petrified, so realised what she'd done but still drove off without leaving an apology or contact details. No sympathy for her I'm afraid.

I wouldn't take anything they say at face value personally - I wouldn't be surprised if they do everything they can to reduce the amount of hours employees spend doing things which don't make them any money.

Have you looked at the site/area to see if it's overlooked by CCTV? If so, I *think* you have a right to ask for a copy of any CCTV footage on which you have been captured - at least it could reveal something (even if it's your wife driving and getting out of an undamaged car, coming back to a damaged one).
