I bought an item from America, had to pay customs and UPS fees on delivery.

The item is damaged and I'm going to ask for a full refund. What happens to the customs and UPS fees?

If it was an order within the UK and I'd been sent something damaged, I'd expect a full refund including tax and delivery costs... Not sure how it works with an international order though.

you'll get it back if you fill in the correct paperwork

You can claim the tax from HMRC but you won't get the UPS fee back - they already did the work to import it for you.

As said, once you have arranged with the shipper for refund/replacement etc then you will have to approach HMRC and fill out the relevant paperwork to claim back the duties. The clearance fee (£11 IIRC) is not refundable
