Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit impounded an Audi RS6 over the weekend, looks like they're trying to retain it for their own use:

Makes a lot of sense.

They can auction it off and then buy something else... or they can keep that.

That's already the score, though, since it's been impounded along with £3k in cash, and three people are looking at prosecution.

Would probably cost more to run/maintain than a normal patrol car they actually pay for.

If they keep it, I do hope it’s driver prefixes any and all driving with ‘fire up the Quattro!’

They’d better have deep pockets if they want to run it ;-)

I think a court would need to make a Confiscation Order under POCA in the first place.

The police would then keep it rather than sell it if that's possible - usually items auctioned off are split between the police and government.

No sure how it would work with insurance / liability i.e. it'd probably need a full check to make sure it's safe. Could be more hassle than it's worth unless they use for for engagement type work.

It wouldn’t be a confiscation order under poca, if it was used in/connected to an offence I think a disposal order would be sufficent. Judge can even direct that the vehicle is retained by Police.

I saw a Northumbria Police firearms team knocking around in a black X6 a few days ago, retrofitted with all the usual blue lights, armoured glass etc, but certainly not supplied under any fleet deal. More power to their elbow.

Offset perhaps by not having the massive up front purchase cost...

Didn't a force in Scotland acquire a Q8 in a similar fashion, which ended up being targeted for vandalism by both friends and enemies of the ex owner?

Nothing says "mouthbreather" quite like holding a grudge against the police for confiscating the car of your drug-dealer mate...

They'd better leave the keys to it somewhere visible downstairs in the police station!

OK, I must have made it up. Which is why I knew a firearms team was in it, and I imagined the big X6 badge on it's arse.
