What's happening to the CPS? Anyone on here?
Discussion
I was in a court yesterday where 4 trials collapsed due to the CPS being able to offer no evidence, this was mainly due to statements and exhibits not being served until the trial was due to start (let alone 7 days before).
This is happening more often and prosecutors seem to think they will be allowed to introduce evidence at the last minute even when it is sometimes of a technical nature that would demand time to contradict?
Just wondered whether this was Nationwide and if there was any insider views on here?

Austerity. Cut after cut after cut. Underfunding, demoralisation, poor staffing, good people leaving.
Plus smaller CPS offices being closed down, and all of their cases being dealt with by larger offices further away that are already being over-stretched.Added to that, the ever increasing number of rules, regulations and procedures that the Police and the CPS have to work to are a judicial nightmare, and create a myriad of loopholes that can cause a case to have to be dropped.
It's all too easy to simply declare the CPS to be a bunch of fools who simply don't know what they're doing (as some on here happily do!), but the reality is, these days they're almost having to fight against the system just to try to get the job done!
It needs proper funding. It needs a period of stability. It needs someone in government with a bit of sense to look out for them. It needs reform.
But it is cheaper than ever before, the only criterion it is judged by, so everyone is as pleased as could be.
The way CPS has been treated is a disgrace. Not only that, it is counter productive.

I was at Southwark Crown Court last month (doing a bit of POCA). I don't usually go there. Carpets held together with tape. Plaster falling from the ceiling. One probation officer for fourteen Courts. Prisoners nor produced by G4S. Case delayed because no interpreter. Huge queue at the metal detectors. OK coffee.
