I have just sold something on ebay for about £100.

The buyer has just messaged me to say his card didn't work and can his daughter pay on her paypal.

Could this be some kind of scam or can anyone use their paypal to pay for someone elses winning bid? Does the Paypal account name/address and the eBay account have to tie up or something?

Thanks

I've had a friend pay for my stuff on Ebay with his Paypal so should be okay.

don't blame me when it goes horribly wrong.

Nope. In fact they could just change the paypal account & pay without you ever knowing (so I don't know why they mentioned it)

Shouldn't be a problem as long as (a) she logs into Paypal from the ebay Pay Now button and (b) you send it to her verified address.

To her verified address - I presume that is the address of the buyer? I guess I wouldn't see the address of the Paypal account owner?

You mean pay outside of Ebay?

Either way, the way Ebay works now, the buyer has the upper hand regardless.

Hmm they wern't clear on this but prompted by your post, I have messaged them to ensure they follow the eBay link against my item for pay using Paypal.

I would urge caution. If the daughters account is different to the buyers account then there is no eBay connection? Sounds scammy.

Agree with other posters. If they click the link to pay by PayPal, it should let them sign into any account they like to send the money. You should then have an address for them on the Paypal transaction record, which is the one I'd say to send it to.

Wait, but if I post the item to the paypal (daughter's) address, couldn't the bidder (father) claim he never recieved the item? Vice-versa? Could this be engineered by them to show I have posted the item to the "wrong address" hence no payment?

I just read that you can add a new address to a PayPal account. You can have your Paypal account associated with 9 addresses apparently.

Would it make the most sense for the buyer's Daughter to add the Fathers address on her paypal so that I post the item to the bidders address and the money comes from the same address?

I believe the rules are to send it to the verified address, that being the one associated with the payment account, to get the "seller protection". Happy to be corrected if not.

Edit: Yes, I think any address added to the paypal account "counts". I have both my home and work addresses, for instance.

His card didn’t work for his PayPal? So why can’t the daughter transfer £100 into his account & then pay you?

I smell a dirty rat...

Daughter pays by PayPal and you ship item.
Buyer claims it didn’t turn up/broken/not as described.
She starts dispute with Ebay they claw 100 from your account. Wave goodbye to money and item.

This, basically,is how this is probably going to pan out.

I use different email addresses for Paypal and eBay, no problem at all.

I'm talking postal addresses rather than email addresses.

I have asked the buyer to get the same address on Paypal and eBay to try and keep things simple. Lets see what happens.

I'm such an easy eBay buyer - instant payment with Paypal. I wish others would play nicely too.

To be fair, not everyone is totally comfortable using on-line services, and totally au fait with how all the various aspects of the services work (but strangely, those who are comfortable and au fait with on-line services and social media etc., etc., seem to automatically assume that, just because they find it all easy to use, everybody else should!)

It may well be the case that the buyer would like to "play nicely too", but has genuinely hit a problem with their payment that they don't really know how to sort out any other way, and using their daughter's Paypal account seems the simplest solution.

Can you not just cancel the winning bid and get the 'daughter' to bid on her ebay account, and pay for it with her paypal.
