I thought I'd done the correct thing by putting a car on SORN as the tax runs out at the end of December. When I received the form to tax/SORN it at the beginning of this month, I went online and registered it SORN, even though I had nearly a month left to go with the tax.

As it's a relatively nice dry day today I thought I'd just go for a little drive around in it, mainly just to warm all the fluids so I can give it a full check over before moth-balling it for a few months. Having just checked it's status online, it's telling me that it's now SORN and not taxed, even though it was paid for until the end of the month.

Have I fallen into the trap of just losing a months tax, or will I be OK to run it around a bit today? Not trying to cheat anyone here, just trying to do the right thing, though I don't want it flagged up by every passing police car/camera as an untaxed vehicle. Is there a provision for this, or do I just have to accept the fact I've lost the right to use it?

I’m certain tax is void once you SORN it. Think you get a rebate if there’s more than a month left but I’ve never been in that position and I’m sure someone here would have been to let you know.

As soon as you declare it SORN online it will then be considered SORN'd and you'll lose any part month remaining, with any full months paid being refunded. If you do it via post then there would be a day or more for postage and processing before DVLA would consider it SORN.

So, yes, you just chucked away the remaining paid part moth of tax, and you're risking getting pinged by ANPR if you drive it.

Thanks guys, seems like naivete on my part then.

Ah well, bit of a moot point now anyway as it's raining again so the car's not going anywhere. I'll remember for the next time though. smile

Can't see this working today to be honest, and next week's out as well as I happen to be taking him to the airport on Tuesday morning as he's away for a few days sunshine so the garage is shut. frown

I'll just run it up to temp in the garage and give it a quick once-over from there.

The tax reminder now gives the option to SORN from the end of the month, any other way and it's immediate(and appears online a lot quicker than when taxing it) More income from the changes frown

A total, complete and utter scam.

Anyone declaring SORN, on a vehicle with an MOT that's valid until the end of the month should be permitted to keep/drive the vehicle on a public highway until the end of the month.

The only reason not to make this standard practice is to make a few prosecutions and screw the unsuspecting motorist for a few more quid.

yes For the OP to have an earlier SORN date he must have done it wrong.
By doing it online using the 11 digit reference from the V5C instead of the 16 digit one off the V11 he received

No so: there are other options. By phone quoting the appropriate reference (see above), or by post using form V890.
In the latter case the applicant can enter whatever date suits them.

The entire thing's a waste of time, really. Always has been.

You are meant to keep a car off the road if untaxed/uninsured. All the SORN is really is a statement that you won't break the law. Having it be an offence not to declare the SORN even if you have tucked the car away in a garage the entire period it has been untaxed is stupid.

As stated, I probably did do it wrong as I more than likely misread the form. It wouldn't be the first time and probably won't be the last...

Doesn't really matter now, though it would have been nice to get a little run in the car yesterday morning while the weather was relatively dry. Not the end of the world however as it's now in the garage getting a good dose of looking at, then being cleaned and prepared for next years adventures starting in April or thereabouts.

I did manage to get the E Class out for a quick blast round though, so all was not lost.

Thanks for all the replies and I hope you all enjoy what's left of the festivities. I'll be the one in the garage with the wire brushes and paint. biggrin
