This may not be appropriate for SP&L but since problems with insurance claims often crop up, I'm thinking this is the place to ask!

Need to renew the insurance on the Golf - currently have both cars with Admiral, who are usually referred to in not particularly glowing terms if you need to make a claim. I've made 1 in the last 8 years and they were OK for me, but I expected to have aggravation and just rode the wave.....

Any recommendations for companies that will treat you fairly, won't farm you off onto a claims management company inappropriately etc, don't charge a ridiculous premium for not being arses? I'm thinking LV must be up there somewhere but not sure how to weed out the other search results between good and bad.

Suggestions welcome smile

LV have always been great to deal with - but I've never had to claim so can't comment on that side.

Last claim I had to make was through Admiral. No problems (that said it was a straight forward crash).

In my opinion they're all much of a muchness so just go with whomever is cheapest.

Aviva for me.

Every year I go through the same process of getting a new quote because their renewal will be 20% more expensive. Other than that they have helpful UK-based call centre people, who answer the phone promptly and are perfectly knowledgeable.

Premiums are perhaps 10% higher than the cheapest available, but worth that IMHO.

NFU https://www.nfumutual.co.uk are well regarded, but load the premiums if you are not pretty rural.

Marks and Spencer have always been very good, we've had to claim once or twice (for home insurance, I assume the car side would be as good). I prefer larger companies with a good rep to protect, whether it actually makes any difference in practice is open for debate.

Judging from some of the posts on this forum, I wouldn't touch a certain ship-related company with an extremely long bargepole.

SAGA for old gits.

The only claim I had in the last 10 years was with them and they were excellent. None of this pissing around, with ads for like for like cars. They wrote off my Disco 2 and paid a reasonable price to replace.

Admiral/Autoglass were chocolate teapots when I had a windscreen claim a couple of years ago. Autoglass completely useless and liars to boot and Admiral would only get involved when I chased them.

And then there's Hiscox on home contents. Charge 3 times the premium of the "sheds" and then wriggle when it comes to a claim. Contents are covered anywhere in the world, they say. Obviously except the warehouse that left a brand 3 piece suite out in the rain for 3 days which pretty much destroyed it.

I insure via a broker, Chris Knott. You get to speak to one of half a dozen (interested) individuals. I've only had a windscreen claim but they helped out when Autoglass wanted a week to do it.

Friends have used NFL and are pleased with them.

Obviously I don't know the full circumstances here, or the grounds on which your claim was declined, but purely on the basis of what you've said so far, I don't blame them.

Insurers like Hiscox don't "wriggle out of a claim" - they abide by the policy wording. And if you don't agree with that, then appeal. The process will be set out in your policy documents.

LV - I wrote off a leased five month old E class in 2016 and they paid for it all and settled all the finance (so I didn’t need the gap cover) in a week. As a bonus I didn’t get charged my excess either.

Very good cover and the bloke who looked after my claim was great.

Currently with Direct Line, but haven't had to make a claim with them.
Previously used Admiral who were okay dealing with my claim, once I'd explained that no one was in the car when it got hit, so please stop trying to start a personal injury claim.

I've also used a few brokers. Adrian Flux were cheap at first, but tried to charge me £800 for an MX5 as it was a performance car.. I'd been paying them £180 for a modified Saab with twice the power of the Mazda.
Chris Knott were okay, but far too expensive at renewal and wouldn't match their new customer price.
The other half uses Anthony D Evans - they mainly specialise in horseboxes, but were also cheapest for her Focus. They've been extremely helpful - didn't charge extra to add commuting cover to the horsebox for a week (while her previous car was having a rebuild). Amazingly, the horsebox is the cheapest to insure each year - under £250 for fully comp, any driver over 25, 8000 mile a year limit.

Another vote for LV, also the AA and A Plan have always been good in my experience.

Another vote for LV. Had a claim just over 12 months ago when our lad wrote off my car. Very easy to deal with and a very fair first offer on the car, valuing it at more than I had paid 6 months prior, money in my account within a week of the claim. As i had protected no claims the renewal wasnt too painful either, even though I included our lad on the policy again.

If you can get a good price, I can recommend First Central Insurance - https://www.1stcentralinsurance.com/

I made a claim with them a couple of years ago (non-fault accident where my car was written off), and they were great. Had my car picked up, they gave me a "like-for-like" courtesy car (a brand new BMW 320d M-Sport Touring for my written off E39 BMW 528i Touring), and paid me out more than the E39 was worth (without arguing the toss).

Honestly, cannot fault them.

You must be taking the piss. Either that or you work for their PR department, Aviva are THE worst people to deal with IMO.
You ring with a query and you are held in a que for 30 - 40 mins listening to inane musak interspersed with 'We are helping lots of people today and we will get round to speaking to you after we have finished filing our nails' statements every now and again, and then the bds cut you off!!

I'd rather deal with 'George' in Bangladesh than the the tossers at Aviva!

I have an LV underwritten policy via a specialist broker and had to get a repair done this year to the front after a light knock, couldn't fault them, all parts used were genuine imported (my car is a Japanese spec with different components to UK (HID headlamp was £800 compared to UK none HID), different bumper beam assembly etc.)

All repairs done to original spec and not one query on the costs of parts.

Had my renewal through recently and the cost was the same as last year. (i have 10 year protected no claims).

I use Keith Michaels (gary moulson) as the broker, my car is heavily modded, all declared.

Whole family is with Direct Line, have been for 10 years plus. Can't fault them, decent quotes every time, we've had a few claims and non claim incidents over the years including a couple of write offs and it's never affected the premiums. We do a fair bit of swapping cars, adding others to the policies etc and they always make the changes immediately over a quick simple phone call with no hidden/extra charges. I've got one commercial policy along with the car policies and they were happy to swap over my NCD to it. Only vehicles not with them are the bikes and my 'classic' MX5. as they couldn't match the specialists on price.

I have been with LV for a few years now and have been brilliant.

Trouble is, in the new year, GI won't be wholly owned by LV anymore so god knows what will happen.

I've also had good experience with Aviva. My Defender was stolen, and they were prompt to pay out, quite generous and easy to deal with. No long waits on the phone before being cut off.

I continue to use Aviva when they are price competitive.
