Does anyone know whether or not the Police have done any research into the effect that their current involvement with "SafetyCam Partnerships" has had / is having on their public support in the broader sense?

Nearly everyone in my family now has speeding points - all otherwise completely law abiding people who now, to varying extents, feel criminalised. In other words, they've started to share the same feelings of contempt and resentment towards the Police that one might otherwise expect to find only in the "real" criminal fraternity.

Given their apparent impotence in the face of real crime, I'd imagine the Police would be doing all in their power to foster the support of the public, rather than further alienate them.

Sign of the times I'm afraid.

Loads of cops don't agree with the Scamera system either. It is just a transparent method of taxation. As somebody stated on another thread (and I agree) if it was about safety, they'd put points on your license and not charge the cash.

Loads of cops joined the force with a view to making a difference and are forced by the system to only target revenue orientated infringements. I'm sure that most would rather see burglars and car thieves get justice but it's not gonna happen 'cos there's no money in it !

Coming out with crap like 'we intend to make speeding as anti-social as drink driving' has only made drink driving more trivial, driving standards are getting worse, not better and people are becoming indifferent. Loads of people have the attitude that sooner or later they will loose their license so why bother to make an effort.

Nobody (or hardly anyone) would have a problem with Scameras in principal provided that they were used in areas such as schools etc...

New Labour - Same old bullshit ! this is a government who states that the preservation of lives is a priority and then (along with a moronic, retarded chimp) decide to invade a country for all the wrong reasons with scant regard to the human cost.

Speed Cameras save lives ! - Get Some Out To Iraq then Tony !! yer in' pr1ck

I believe some retired and current Inspectors have had the guts to say so. I think it's obvious.

Problem is, to make statements like that involves crossing the hands that hold the purse strings.

Also, the people who actually get the flak will be the poor lads (and lasses) of the type that post here.

The people who make the operational decisions won't have gone near the public in years.

Trouble is folks, it's the governments' plans that those of us up in the pointy end have to uphold.

My views on speed camera's are well known, but in respect for ANPR camera's and units - they are a brilliant bit of kit that should be fitted to every car and every camera.

And yes, I think public perception of the police has deteriorated due to grey boxes - until they meet a good pc or have a good experience - sadly not many people remember that bit.

Indeed. I am no fan of cameras. And I also make no secret of it at work. I bumped into a Sergeant who works for our Revenue Partnership now. My opening greeting was, "Hi **** I never knew you'd left the job!"

He took it in good spirit. I think.
