Speed limits on private land? Unenforceable?
Discussion
AFAIK a 5mph speed limit is unenforceable. One of the bus stations I drive into has a theoretical 5mph speed limit, they make a big thing of the limit but there is only one sign at one end saying it, there's nothing at the other end nor is there a sign to say you are going from a 5mph to a 30mph limit.
As far as I know, the road traffic act does apply to private land that is publicly accessible, however the signage would not have a traffic regulation order, so would be guidance only.
That being said, if anything happened, or even if a policeman so thought, you could be done for speeding there under driving without due care and consideration, and in an insurance claim it would be most definitely used against you.

I once allowed someone in the village to use our field for a bit of fun. Unfortunately, they decided to be dicks, and annoy both me and others due to speeding and noise. I turfed them off and they haven't been back on there ever again, despite promising they wouldn't repeat the same behaviour. On another occasion, we allowed someone else to use the field for a different purpose. They left behind a load of crap and caused damage to the soil. Despite having allowed the field to be used for this annually for some years, that one episode has meant that it isn't happening any more.
Moral of the story is that if you're acting like an a
hole on privately owned land, expect to be chucked off and not to be able to use it ever again. A speed limit they set may not be "legally enforceable" so you won't have to pay a fine or receive points, but they can legally kick you off and bar you from using it.

This, it's a caravan park, not a rally stage.
There was a 5mph speed limit on Hayle Caravan club in Cornwall site a few years back, and I said to the warden "That's a bit low isn't it?"He explained a five year old girl had been knocked down the year before, don't know how badly injured she was.
Sometimes you DO have to think of the children.
