Good morning all,

I hope you can help settle a small argument that we are having in work today.

A chap is replacing the boards of his decking, and in the process has partially buried a life size plastic skeleton he bought from B&M.

The idea being that when the next home owner renews the decking boards again in 10-15 years, or removes the decking, they will get quite a surprise.

I can't see anything wrong with this, and don't believe it is breaking any laws. As far as I'm aware it's not illegal to carry out a practical joke in your own home even if it is for the next owners to find

My work colleagues however are convinced that the perpetrator will be in a lot of trouble when it is discovered claiming 'Alarm and distress to a member of the public' will be caused, leading onto wasting police time and someone even suggested it was perverting the course of justice, which is complete nonsense as far as I can see.

Thoughts?

Decking boards are lethal when wet. I'm surprised there aren't more skeletons buried underneath them.

Bit of a weird thing to do, especially as he won't be there to see the reaction when it's unearthed.

Hopefully, "Made In Taiwan" moulded into the skull will mean not too much police time is wasted in the future.

Exactly what I thought.

I didn't think it would fool anyone for more than a minute.

I'm their employer... biggrin

Don't worry, they don't perform anything that requires large amounts of thought.

And no, snowflake is never an insult I would use, especially as the people doing the arguing on this are in their 40's and 50's and wouldn't know what it meant.

It's a bit off in my view - though not illegal.

Aside from the hassle for the police and their time wasted in X years.. I don't see the funny side.

Jokes normally have a few facets:

  • Ideally you see the reaction from the prank. Not likely in this case
  • Practical jokes aren't normally against random people...
Who will get to laugh?

A practical joke would be your mate being about to change his decking, getting his wife in on a joke and then sneaking round while he is out and putting a skeleton under old decking.

It will be really funny when the guy who replaces the decking comes round to your mate's place and decks him.

Is he 15 or just a complete tt?

Could make it into the local rag - then he'd know. I like the idea personally. smile

Should be illegal to put new decking in, but sadly it's just considered bad taste.

As said that is a viral photo.

But I agree with the principle, it's a funny thing to do. You don't necessarily have to see the result to have some fun.

At no point did I say it was anyone I know.

It isn't.

It was a photo I saw on 'the internets' this morning accompanied by a description of the prank.

Agreed. You can have fun imagining the distress and annoyance you are causing someone else you'll never meet.

When my kids were young, if ever they got a helium balloon at a party or whatever, we would get a gold envelope (I had a pack of them I'd got from somewhere or other) tie it to the balloon with a big pound sign on the outside of the envelope.

On the inside we'd put a note saying "that had you fooled". Then release it

Kids thought that was a hoot.
