Cyclists aren't allowed to overtake other cyclists, even if there's enough room for a car to overtake three of them:

Anyone had any encounters with road users who've just made up their own laws?

The other common one is obviously "you can't filter on a motorcycle"?

I got pulled up by the a lady police officer on her own in a panda car for overtaking an OAP doing 25mph on a national speed limit , it was a very wide road , almost wide enough to be dual carriageway and the oap was hard up against the curb. Her reason “its illegal to overtake on double white lines !” I said it wasn’t IF you don’t cross the lines , she admited I hadn’t crossed the lines, but insisted it was still illegal . She told me to wait by the side of my car went back to hers to radio in and get clarification! She got on the radio , spend about 3 minutes clearly arguing with them , then started her car and just drove off, zero eye contact ! I just stood and watched her go !

I can imagine the reply from control was something along the lines of "you should be arresting the eejit who was doing 25mph in a NSL road you wombat, apologise to the guy you've inconvenienced and go" so she just drove off on the off chance 25mph Phyllis was still driving a mile up the road and she could get a hit,

But filtering on a motorcycle isn't 'allowed' in all circumstances, only some.

Maybe you are making up your own laws?

Sorry was I not specific enough for you. People in heavy traffic with large lanes and gaps between the traffic wide enough for a bike telling me I can't filter and should "wait in the traffic like everybody else"; thankfully I haven't been low-speed shunted as some bikers have for daring to make the traffic jam a bit shorter!

The issue is one of definition and whether the motorcyclist is carefully doing 10mph through slow or stationary traffic and anticipating any change of lane, or 70-80mph through heavy contested traffic doing 50-60mph.

The first is logical and the second is being a idiot up for a Darwin award, but you will still get motorcyclists bleating "filtering is allowed".

So under which circumstances are you not allowed to filter on a motorcycle?

I would think in the circumstances I encounter some mornings, consisting of a motorcyclist on the wrong side of double white lines on a blind bend ‘filtering’ at 25mph to passs traffic going at 15 mph to save about 4 seconds, but don’t worry folks he switches his hazard warning lights on for that part of the the commute, he is wasting his money on pension payments me thinks!

Sounds like an overtake rather than filtering to me. If you're on the other side of the solid white that's what I would class it is. Some solid whites are also in places where they really don't need to be.

surely its an overtake if you're the other side of a broken white line: other side of a solid white being an illegal overtake?

Especially when they do so when you're in a van, like my work one, where they're invisible. An easy way to get themselves wiped out if I moved left with them blind to me.

My mum doesn't believe speeding laws apply to people of her age. If she gets stopped by a policemen, he'll see she's old and won't do her. If she gets done on a camera, she just has to write in and say "I'm 78" and all charges will be dropped. Because "They are after young hooligans, not people like me".

To be fair, on normal roads she doesn't go mad but on the motorway she likes to stick at around 100mph. So far she's evaded capture!!!

NSL on a dual carriageway - the Bristol ring road in this case - is 60mph. That idea was dropped after he phoned home.

(Preceded by "I had to do 90 to catch you!". Of course you did. A GS300 accelerates from 0 to 70 a lot quicker than that diesel LDV minibus you're driving, and you weren't doing 90 in that thing in that distance, and you caught me because I stopped at the traffic lights.... Officer. Still, it was interesting to find out that it's not only traffic officers who have no understanding of basic physics. smile)

Hardly surprising. There is a case of a GMTV or Good Morning competition where they asked the Question regarding White Lines on the Road. Their Answer that was accepted was "No Overtaking". Even after taking them to court I believe the Judge decided that the definition used was acceptable even though it was incorrect.

this really bugs me - OF COURSE you had to go faster than me to catch me up. If you wanted to catch me more quickly you'll have to go even faster, it's just a meaningless phrase designed to have people 'thinking' that there was a greater speed involved than actually was the case

Unfortunately, it is not defined in law as far as I can see other than in case law and would suspect that any issue caused by filtering would be judged on its merits on a case by case basis. However, I think a reasonable person would see that filtering through slow moving, congested traffic on a motorcycle is reasonable - Drivers will have more time and opportunity to assess all of their surroundings, front and to the rear. I would also suspect that its not reasonable for drivers of cars/vans/lorries etc whom are travelling at normal road speeds (50+ on a two or more lane carriageway) to be constantly looking behind them for motorcycles with a death wish. At that speed, more concentration should be given to what is happening in front and a lot less time what is happening behind. I believe that the general advice is that a driver should be looking in their RVM about every 7 seconds. A bike filtering could easily approach unseen in that time.

To be clear though, I personally do encourage bikes to filter - if i do see them behind, at whatever speed, I will move over to give them more room - i doubt that any bike in a queue of traffic will slow me down any, so cant see any reason to hinder their progress.
