I saw something astonishing and thought I'd share.

Someone was actually pulled over for sitting at 69mph in the outside lane of the M4, holding up a long queue of traffic. I actually let out a little cheer as I saw it happen. Volvo-driving plod from Thames Valley, I salute you.

Unfortunately it was on that bit of the M4 by Slough - regular users will know what I mean - where the standard of driving becomes suddenly atrocious. So his action was somewhat reminiscent of Canute. Still, every little helps.

How do you know that was what the stop was for?

Because that's what he was doing at the time he was nicked.

I suppose it could have been for the kilogram of cocaine in his glovebox and boot full of Armalites, but I'm just going out on a limb.

You are indeed. The police will be getting a host of information on the vehicle and possible driver as they follow it. It could be for what you said but equally it could be for the kilogram of cocaine in his glovebox and boot full of Armalites.

Do you think he'd have stopped so willingly carrying coke and weapons ?

He'd have been featured on the next series of Road wars with a mad chase for the next 20 miles of M4.

Agreed, but you forgot to mention "eventually caught, but released without charge as he jumped out of car and sat on the wall, so they couldn't be sure he was the driver"

Doesn't really matter. Policeman wasn't wearing his hat so all investigations are invalid.

I remember years ago in France an angry policeman overtaking a massive line of traffic to get to a tractor holding everyone up and pulling him over. How we cheered!

They should do it more often.

No, no. When it involves Callaghan it's clearly a pantomime.

Here I think the officer would be reported for queue jumping.
