Police Interceptors - What happened to the Scoobies & Evo's?
Discussion
wasn't sure what section to put this in but it is plod related..
I've seen a variaty of performance police cars on TV, most notably:
WRX
EVO
Mark5 Golf R32
Insignia VXR
Audi S3
i think they must have prevented a fair few dangerous chases just with their 'credentials' - surely it would be cheaper/safer to have a few of these for each force with the assumption the majority of tag sporting scroats wouldn't bother trying to outrun an EVO X in their freshly stolen Audi A4 than have someone check their (Stolen) rear view, see a diesel hyundai with its front grill lit up with blue strobes and decide they'll prob be able to lose it.
I know there has been some extreme cost cutting across various forces but are any of these still run anywhere? if so, what are their use now?

Years ago Northumbria had a small number of Escort Cosworths. Couple got nicked and they disappeared off the streets after that.I've seen a variaty of performance police cars on TV, most notably:

Hampshire and Thames Valley constabularies use BMW 330d's which are apparently faster than a Lambo according to their owners. I've seen a variaty of performance police cars on TV, most notably:

I've seen a few X5's and XC90's which aren't cheap vehicles either.
However with the low number of car chases in the UK and a policy of interception or surveillance over pursuit, its rather pointless to have them when we could have two Astra Diesels for GD's for the same cost.
There is always an exception obviously but..
I don't think there as many actual Police pursuits these days due to:
Cars being knicked with coded keys, scanners and other clever trickery meaning they often aren't reported until they're long gone.
There are far fewer police about to stumble upon a stolen car which then does a runner.
Higher end/ faster stuff,I imagine, is stolen by more professional types who are less likely to find themselves in a chase. (Cloned plates etc)
The scrotes who are more likely to find themselves in a chase are opotunist types and more likely to be in an average car which a trained copper in a T5/ BLE will have no probs catching.
All this means there is less need for high maintenance cars like Scoobys, Evos etc
My thoughts

Wrong. There are plenty of pursuits. These days a 330D is just as fast and more reliable than an old scooby or evo. Plus they're half the cost on Police deals. I don't think there as many actual Police pursuits these days due to:

Our Escort Cosworths were targeted, rammed and written off in a short space of time. The helicopter was fire-bombed too (and remained the subject of attacks for many years).

Not sure about them being faster than Lambos!!
I was stopped whilst driving a MK7 Golf R by a Metropolitan Police Traffic Car (330D or 335D not sure what they use these days.) They followed me for about 10 minutes before finally pulling me. He thanked me for stopping as he said if I had failed to stop they wouldn't have caught up hence the long following distance whilst they checked what else was in the area.
Not being funny, but I hardly ever see a marked/liveried Police car on the road these days unless I'm in Zone 1 or 2 in London. Whenever I do I'm always surprised and it's usually a bog standard Ford Focus.
I know that Surrey & Sussex share some unmarked BMW's and theres a blue S3 floating around.

My Uncle is an officer in Surrey/Sussex (so few police around he covers all the way from Chichester to Gatwick!)

Popped in for tea once in a Sepang Blue 65 reg S3 Saloon unmarked. He even took me out for a quick spin in it! This was back in 2016, he is very upset at the moment as they have replaced his lovely S3 with an A6 3.0TDI Estate...

Anyway yet to see a car that's quicker than a radio and the chopper coppers nearly always get their man
Just plan your criminal endeavours around a bit of drizzle, a slight breeze or any clouds on the horizon.Or use a moped.

They really aren't - particularly not in the wet or on country lanes.Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
