I just had a tug from Hants police in my wife’s car for no insurance. The officer was really helpful, checking out the exact situation with Citroen insurance etc. Seems there has been some sort of cock up which left the car uninsured since December!!! yikes

Once that was established, unprompted he asked if I had insurance on another car, which I do. He checked that out and thankfully I was legal to drive her car on my TP insurance. There was no need for him to think about that option, I hadn’t as I was more concerned at the time what the cock up could be on the missus’s car.

Just goes to show (as I have always said) that there are good guys out there looking to solve problems and not just after a collar. If you are on here Officer, thanks again.

Will be sorting out Citroen insurance tonight when the missus gets home, and sticking to the other car in the interim just in case I bend hers expensively on TP only.

I thought the DOC TPO cover was only valid if the other car is insured?

I actually questioned that, and he said I was ok.

Depends on the policy. Some require it, some don't.

That was lucky then, pretty much every policy i've had has it as a condition.

That is what I thought. If it was, he didn’t find it on his in-car checks as I asked the question before he went back to his car - as I gave him the details of my other car.

Nobody will be driving it any more till it is sorted anyway.

It's scary - once forgotten, things like this are the only way you find out.

My late ex-wife died in May 2012.
I loaned her car to a friend who had had his written off in an accident in June.
Tax expired a few weeks later, so he went to renew it.
"No MOT" came the answer from the DVLA website - she was ill on and off for most of the last year she was alive and completely forgot to MOT it in August 2011.

I am doubtful that it was forgotten this end. We bought the car new, so service, tax (yes, even at £0 you have to do the online bit annually), insurance etc all comes at once in November. The insurance lapsed about 6 weeks after that date, so maybe something happened with the payment (adequate funds, should not be an issue), or recognition of the payment on their systems I guess.

I will get her to go through her statements for that month and emails to see if we have any evidence of payment or confirmation of taking on risk. We certainly have had no other written correspondence from the insurer, so a little confused.

Worth reading this.,

Also, if the car is financed, or on PCP etc, the real 'owners' of the car may have policies about this too.

How many times does this get raised on here.

To give you an idea of how it isn’t the case. Some of the biggest insurers Direct Line and their brands Churchill, Privilege and other white label products (Sainsburys for one) don’t require it, nor do LV.

Admiral require the other car to be insured for the DOC to be valid though.

The only answer is to check your policy booklet, but don’t assume that it always requires the other car to be insured.

This is interesting when it's regarding third party only on a leased/hire car as your insurance would pay for any damage you cause to others but what if you had written the car off? You'd now be explaining that to Citroën finance and presumably have to keep paying for it.

Are you mad? Mouth firmly shut until I got home would be my approach.

PS Did you say anything like "Gosh, my wife has been driving for months uninsured!" They could still come after her armed with that confession evil

Happened to a friend. Car on HP written off but only 3rd party covered. Had to continue paying for three more years but car was a goner.

I understand what you are saying. I was fortunate not to be in that position on my insurance having sort of dobbed myself in.

smile No, I did not say anything like that. Truth is she very rarely drives it. I take her to work and back every day, and when we go out, no matter what car we are in I drive. I couldn’t even tell you if she has driven it this year !! She has driven mine though.

To the question of damaging the car from aka-kerrily, the car is not leased or financed, so I have no idea what would happen other than the obvious little snag that I would have to pay for it to be fixed on TPO.

Much of this result is from passing the attitude test I think. Unless you get a real jobsworth, if you're honest, polite and it's a genuine mistake they're unlikely to nick you, and usually helpful.

Really? I wouldn’t know, I can’t remember the last time I had occasion to speak with plod, but I’m intrigued to know why you believe this to be the case?

On the flip side, I'm intrigued to know why you think that treating someone with respect, being honest and polite might make them less inclined to help you?

Ask a copper about the attitude test and you will find out if it is the case
