Driving to work this morning I came across a set of temporary lights that were clearly just showing green to one direction and red to the other.

There were no workers about (typically) to fix or switch them off and it got me wondering what should drivers do in this situation, sit there all day or ignore a red light?

I go through lots of red lights, even when they're not broken. Why would you sit there like a lemming?

I understood the legally correct approach is to turn round and find another route...

That can be just as unsafe than just going through though...

Assess each case individually, and time it. 10 minutes and the lights are broken. 1 minute and they might not be.

Because it is a legal requirement to stop at red lights.

ps Lemmings are not renowned for just sitting places!

What would've happened if human ingenuity had been stamped out years ok. Someone can't move because a light says so even when it's clearly fked?
Some people need their heads knocking together.

Legally or not, if lights on a cross road are obviously stuck on red, proceed with caution, can't believe you could be prosecuted for that, unless your an idiot and plough on regardless.

Happened in Aberdeen some time ago, one car sat by the lights whilst everyone figured they were stuck on red, fortunately not a busy junction, all drove cautiously around the car. What option do you have.

I don't doubt it's not technically legal, but as I said, proceed with cautious, no other option.

Look for a telephone number on a sign to report it to?

Failing that if there is a significant traffic holdup call 101 and hope someone answers.

TBH I've gotten so sick of these temp roadworks that i'll run a red if I can see the other end is clear, a lot of them are badly setup, sometime they bang down lights that were set for another location and the delay time between changes is more than 30s with a closed section of just a few car lengths.

No. Temp lights outside my house were stuck on red both ends. I called, they picked up straight away and told me there were no lights in that location. It took 3 days for them to eventually fix them after a number of calls.

Strange because it's in all the reputable dictionaries, and whilst it may have American origins, it's used a lot in my part of the country........ I think if it's in general use, then it is by definition a word.

I’ll go with the OED, unless you’re American, it’s not used in English.

Usage
As past participles of get, got and gotten both date back to Middle English. The form gotten is not used in British English but is very common in North American English. In North American English, got and gotten are not identical in use. Gotten usually implies the process of obtaining something, as in he had gotten us tickets for the show, while got implies the state of possession or ownership, as in I haven't got any money
